Edward Morgan Forster was born in London in 1879. 

He lived for a time in Italy, the background of his first and third novels ("Where angels fear to tread" and "A room with a view" (1908)).

Exploration of the differences between the strictness of english conventions and upper-middle-class codes of social behaviour and the more spontaneous and relaxed way of life of Italians.

When he went to India for the first time, in 1912, he began to work on "A passage to India" (1924).

He died in 1970 and the fallowing year "Maurice" was published.

He wanted to overcome the sense of guilt linked to his homosexuality, regarded as a criminal offence.

it starts in early Edwardian Age with a teen Maurice learning about marriage with a woman as the purpose of life from his teacher.

He then enters university and befriends Clive Durham.

The two will begin a secret love affair.

However, Clive decides to marry according to social convention, leaving Maurice devastated.

In an attempt to 'cure' himself of homosexuality, he turns to a hypnotism expert.

He also meets Alec Scudder, Clive's gamekeeper, and the two have an affair.

Eventually, Maurice asks Alec to stay in England with him instead of emigrating to Argentina, but Alec refuses.

However, in the end he decides to stay with Maurice.

Maurice confesses everything to Clive, who is dismayed.

He finally manages to find happiness.

The novel was made into a film "Maurice" (1987), directed by James Ivory and starring James Wilby as Maurice, Hugh Grant as Clive, and Rupert Graves as Alec. It was directed by James Ivory.

A stage adaptation, written by Roger Parsley and Andy Graham, was produced in 1998 and it was directed by James Wilby. 

A retelling and continuation of the novel by William di Canzio, titled Alec, was published in 2021.
