Share the link with your students and divide the class into different groups. Each one of the groups (3-4 students) will brainstorm and research on one of the questions.

They themselves will upload their results and place them under the correspondent question. Don´t forget to write the name of your country.

There is one question that every country should answer "Local water issues" and one that students should answer, the last one "What question(s) would you like to address in this project?"

To inspire students for their work, you could also show some YouTube videos dealing with this issues. Check Digipad

Climate change - Oceans - Digipad by La Digitale

digipad.app/p/663501/986021423465f

The padlet will show all results from the different countries. With the results of each country we teachers will meet up in an online conference and decide the main question to address in this project.

Enjoy and have fun!

The actions that we can take, start from a personal level and become an action of the community once we all have taken responsibility

First of all, it is of great importance to prevent domestic water waste, by always closing the tap after we are done using it, not letting the water run for a long time when we shower. Further, we ought to use the most water-efficient cycle when usibng the washing machine and dish washer.

another, action we can take ourselves, is avoiding to use our car if it is not necessary and rather use public transportation

It is known that climate change has affected us worldwide. First of all, the greenhouse effect is something that has been torturing us all over the world, due to the radiation that has passed from the Sun to the atmosphere. As a result, it warms the Earth's surface and the lower atmosphere. This is highly related to the overheating and the extraordinary temperatures that have been shown in the last decades. Moreover, another effect of the climate change are the wildfires that lately been increased. It has cost both humans' and animals' lives and furthemore destroyed forests, inhabited areas and became one of the causes of endangerous species. It is also worth mentioning that many lung diseases have been caused by climate change with pneumonia being the most known.Last but not least, lets not forget about the decrease of sustainable resources, for example water, carbon dioxide and other.

They cover more than 70% of the Earth's surface, face several significant threats that compromise their health and biodiversity.

Some of the main threats include Plastic Pollution nowadays millions of tons of plastic enter the oceans every year, causing damage to marine ecosystems. Marine animals often mistake plastic for food, which can be fatal. Another threats is Overfishing that depleting fish stocks at an unsustainable rate.

Our group thinks that climate change and human activities will have severely impacted the ocean by the year 2050, especially through the problem of plastic pollution. This issue is complex and demands immediate action. Plastic waste has become one of the biggest threats to marine ecosystems, with millions of tons entering the ocean each year. By 2050, it is estimated that the amount of plastic in the ocean could outweigh fish if current trends continue. This pollution harms marine life, as animals often ingest or become entangled in plastic debris, leading to severe injuries or death. Addressing this challenge requires global cooperation to reduce plastic production, improve waste management, and promote sustainable alternatives.

Greenhouse gas concentrations are increasing, leading to higher global surface temperatures. This rise in temperature is causing more hot days, heat waves, wildfires, and intense storms. The Arctic is warming at a rate twice as fast as the global average. Climate change is affecting water availability, leading to shortages in many regions, with droughts impacting agriculture and ecosystems. Deserts are expanding, reducing land for food production, while water scarcity is becoming a regular threat for many people. The ocean is absorbing most of the heat from global warming, causing it to warm and sea levels to rise. Carbon dioxide absorption is making the ocean more acidic, endangering marine life. Climate change is also putting species at risk on land and in the ocean, with forest fires, extreme weather, and invasive species posing threats. Health impacts of climate change include air pollution, disease, extreme weather events, mental health issues, and food insecurity. Climate change is the greatest health threat facing humanity.

Ocean warming, caused by increased carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions, is one of the main consequences of climate change. CO₂, when absorbed by the oceans, contributes to rising water temperatures and ocean acidification, negatively affecting marine life and the global climate.

A key solution to combat this issue is the reduction of CO₂ emissions, especially through the transition to renewable energy sources and more sustainable practices. Additionally, reforestation plays a crucial role, as trees absorb CO₂ during photosynthesis, helping to reduce the amount of this gas in the atmosphere. Forests also protect marine ecosystems and help maintain local and global climate balance.

Natural climate change results from several phenomena, mainly with the increase of greenhouse gases (GHG) in the atmosphere.

This factor is caused by the intensive burning of fossil fuels (oil and coal) by industry, transport and energy production, which is one of the main causes responsible for these changes, due to the release of GHGs in large quantities.

The increasing pace of deforestation, the reduction of which is largely related to the conversion of forests into agricultural areas, pastures or urban areas, causes a decrease in the amount of CO2 consumed by trees. In addition, agricultural practice, namely livestock farming (methane release) and increased use of agricultural chemical fertilisers (N2O release) are harmful.

As such, the excessive production of waste due to the increase in population, especially plastics, and their inadequate decomposition in landfills contribute to the release of GHGs, such as methane.

Thus, human actions are destabilizing the balance of the planet, resulting in increased global warming, changes in weather patterns, rising sea levels, and other negative effects known as climate change. To address these causes, it is essential to adopt renewable energy sources, implement sustainable land-use practices, and develop effective strategies to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

Industrial processes and land-use changes increase the issue. Urbanization creates heat islands, while oceans absorb CO₂ but contribute to warming and acidification. Natural factors like volcanic activity have minimal influence compared to human impact.

By 2050, climate change is expected to significantly impact oceans. Rising temperatures will warm ocean waters, disrupting marine ecosystems and bleaching coral reefs. Sea levels will rise due to melting ice caps, threatening coastal habitats. Ocean acidification, caused by increased CO₂ absorption, will harm shellfish and other marine life. Fish populations may decline or migrate, affecting food supplies and fishing industries. Additionally, stronger storms and altered currents could further damage ecosystems and coastal communities.

The heat temperature will increase rapidly and the amount of water collected by rain will be seriously reduced.

~These years we already face a shortage of water due to the increased amount of tourists visiting our beautiful island every single year. Since Greek economy is based on tourism, more and more hotels are being constructed as a result the water available is being wasted on numerous swimming pools instead of using it mindfully on agricultural purposes.

Climate change is primarily caused by human activities that increase greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere. The burning of fossil fuels for energy, transportation, and industry releases carbon dioxide (CO₂), while deforestation reduces the Earth's ability to absorb CO₂. Agriculture also contributes through methane (CH₄) emissions from livestock and rice paddies, and nitrous oxide (N₂O) from fertilizers. Industrial processes, waste management, and the use of synthetic refrigerants further exacerbate the problem. These activities trap heat in the atmosphere, leading to global warming, which triggers a range of harmful environmental effects such as rising sea levels, more extreme weather events, and shifting ecosystems. Reducing emissions and transitioning to renewable energy sources are key to mitigating climate change.

Climate change is having a profound impact on human societies, affecting everything from health to economic stability. Rising temperatures contribute to more frequent and intense heatwaves, which put vulnerable populations at risk for heatstroke, dehydration, and even death. At the same time, shifting weather patterns are exacerbating food and water scarcity, as droughts and floods disrupt agriculture and water supplies. The spread of diseases like malaria and dengue fever is also increasing as warmer temperatures expand the range of disease-carrying mosquitoes. Additionally, sea level rise and extreme weather events, such as hurricanes and wildfires, are displacing millions of people, creating a growing number of climate refugees. With these challenges compounding social and political tensions, climate change is not only an environmental issue but a global crisis that demands urgent action to protect human health, livelihoods, and security.

To stop ocean warming, we need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by shifting to renewable energy, improving energy efficiency, and developing carbon capture technologies. Protecting ecosystems like coral reefs, mangroves, and seagrasses can help absorb carbon and build resilience. Expanding marine protected areas and supporting global climate agreements like the Paris Agreement are also vital. Other solutions, such as marine cloud brightening and ocean fertilization, along with sustainable fisheries management, can further reduce warming impacts. Investing in research, climate-resilient infrastructure, and raising public awareness will support long-term adaptation and mitigation efforts.

These can cause injury, displace people, and even result in loss of life; they also contribute to declining air quality and the spread of diseases such as malaria and dengue. A disrupted climate disrupts food and water security, impairs infrastructures, and puts pressure on economic growth, especially in vulnerable regions. It exacerbates social inequalities, as marginalized communities are often the hardest hit, and can lead to increased migration, political instability, and conflict over resources. The impacts of climate change reach from affecting public health to global security; answers of mitigation and adaptation to these challenges echo in urgent and coordinated global actions.

By 2050, climate change is expected to significantly transform the oceans, leading to warmer waters, rising sea levels, and increased acidification, all of which will disrupt marine ecosystems and human activities. Ocean temperatures will rise, exacerbating coral bleaching and threatening biodiversity, while sea levels could increase by up to 0.6 meters, displacing millions in coastal areas and increasing flooding and erosion. Acidification, driven by higher CO2 levels, will harm shellfish, corals, and plankton, disrupting marine food webs and fisheries, which are vital for global food security. Furthermore, deoxygenation will expand "dead zones" where marine life cannot survive, and ocean circulation changes may intensify extreme weather events, such as hurricanes, further threatening coastal infrastructure and populations. The combination of these factors will put immense pressure on coastal communities, ecosystems, and the global economy, highlighting the urgency of climate mitigation and adaptation strategies.

Water issues in Greece are a growing concern due to a combination of factors including climate change, over-extraction, and inefficient water management. The country faces recurring droughts, particularly in the summer months, which strain the already limited water resources, especially in the islands and southern regions. Agriculture, which consumes a significant portion of available water, often relies on outdated irrigation systems, leading to high levels of water waste. Furthermore, the Mediterranean climate, with its hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters, exacerbates the situation, making water conservation efforts even more critical. The influx of tourists also places additional pressure on local water supplies, particularly in popular destinations. Despite these challenges, efforts to improve water management and sustainability, such as rainwater harvesting and the promotion of water-efficient technologies, are slowly being implemented to address the issue.

The impacts of climate change include warming temperatures, changes in precipitation, increases in the frequency or intensity of some extreme weather events, and rising sea levels. These impacts threaten our health by affecting the food we eat, the water we drink, the air we breathe, and the weather we experience.Global exposure peaked on August 13, 2024, when 4.1 billion people — half (50%) of all people worldwide — experienced unusual temperatures made at least three times more likely by climate change. The average person on the planet experienced 17 extra days of risky heat because of climate change.

Without a doubt, climate change has a lot of harmful effects to it that can not only affect the human race but other species aswell. One of them being the melting of polar ice. Climate warming temperatures are causing ice sheets and glaciers to melt, particularly in the Arctic and Antarctic. The loss of glaciers is affecting water supplies for millions of people who rely on glacial meltwater. This rapid temperature rise also contributes to rising sea levels, which can submerge coastal areas and islands, displace populations, and damage infrastructure, but also to a lot of animals like polar bears losing their homes and fighting to survive on a floating block of ice.

Climate change affects humans in many ways, ranging from direct health impacts to broader social, economic, and environmental challenges. Some key ways climate change affects human life include:

-Health risks: rising temperatures and more extreme weather events can increase the spread of diseases. Heatwaves can cause heat strokes and worsen existing health conditions like heart and respiratory diseases. Air pollution can lead to respiratory problems and other health issues.

-Extreme weather events: increased frequency of extreme events, such as hurricanes, droughts, floods, and wildfires, can result in loss of life, injury, and displacement of people. These events also damage infrastructure and disrupt access to basic services like clean water, food, and healthcare.

-Food and water security: changes in precipitation patterns, droughts, and flooding can disrupt agriculture, affecting food production. This can lead to shortages, price increases, and malnutrition, particularly in vulnerable communities. Reduced freshwater availability can worsen water scarcity.

-Displacement and migration: rising sea levels, extreme weather events, and land degradation may force people to migrate from their homes. This can lead to displacement, creating “climate refugees” and putting pressure on other regions, leading to potential conflicts and strain on resources.

-Economic impacts: climate change can disrupt economies by damaging infrastructure, reducing agricultural productivity, and increasing healthcare costs.

-Social inequalities: the impacts of climate change disproportionately affect vulnerable, poorer and marginalized communities who have fewer resources to adapt.

-Loss of biodiversity: climate change threatens ecosystems and biodiversity, which in turn can affect humans who rely on these systems for food, medicine, and ecosystem services.

By 2050, climate change will greatly affect Italy’s oceans, especially the Mediterranean Sea, which is important for the country’s geography, economy, and wildlife. Here are some key impacts:

-Rising sea levels: Coastal flooding in places like Venice and southern Italy, caused by melting ice and the expansion of warm water, putting infrastructure and historic sites at risk.

-Loss of marine biodiversity: Damage to ecosystems, decrease in corals and native species, and more invasive species due to warmer waters and ocean acidification.

-Ocean acidification: Harm to marine life like shellfish and corals, affecting food chains and coastal protections.

-Marine heatwaves: More frequent heatwaves causing coral bleaching and disrupting fish migration, affecting fishing industries.

-Deoxygenation: Less oxygen in the water, creating “dead zones” where marine life struggles, caused by warming waters and pollution.

-Challenges for fisheries: Lower fish stocks and higher costs for fish farming due to changing migration patterns and ocean conditions.

-Coastal erosion: Loss of habitats and weaker natural defenses like sand dunes due to stronger storms and rising sea levels.

-Tourism impact: Reduced appeal of coastal areas because of harmful algal blooms and ecosystem damage, hurting economies that depend on tourism.

-Increased pollution: More plastics and toxins in the sea due to increased runoff from land and slower currents.

Ocean life faces numerous threats that jeopardize marine ecosystems and the vital services they provide. Climate change, driven by rising global temperatures, causes ocean warming, acidification, and sea level rise, which disrupt habitats like coral reefs and mangroves. Overfishing depletes fish populations, disrupts food chains, and results in significant bycatch of non-target species like dolphins and turtles. Pollution, particularly from plastics and chemical runoff, harms marine organisms through ingestion, entanglement, and habitat degradation. Habitat destruction from coastal development, dredging, and destructive fishing practices further erodes essential ecosystems such as seagrass meadows and coral reefs. Additionally, invasive species introduced by human activity outcompete native species, altering marine biodiversity.

For example, conflicts occurred due to a lack of both surface water and groundwater, impaired drinking water supply, infrastructure problems, distribution issues, and water prices.
