Native American/Black Slave Parallel

The way that the Native American children were assimilated to Christian/white culture was very similar to how the black slaves were treated in America. Black slaves were taken to America, forced to abandon their tradition, and act like the white christians. The native american children that were held at the boarding schools, were also taken against their will, and forced to abandon their heritage and traditions.

The Landback movement

The Landback movement is a movement to return stolen land back into the hands of indigenous people.
The Problem- Land was unlawfully taken from the indigenous people who lived in Mt. Rushmore. Then Mt. Rushmore was erected using the faces of presidents that contributed to systemic racism. America refused to return the stolen land.

The indigenous people are protesting Mt. Rushmore. They are also trying to bring to light all of the systemic racism and harsh treatment of native people.

This movement would be combating climate change because the native people would preserve the land, based on their own beliefs on how nature should be treated. This would combat climate change, because they would not be creating emissions, dig for oil, or tear down unnecessary resources found in nature. This could also be done by making this land into a national park, forcing the nature to be protected.

Native Knowledge 360 Program

The native knowledge 360 program is really trying to reteach how we think about thanksgiving. It is about educating the masses about the real history of thanksgiving and how we can learn and make amends for our past transgressions.

Rethinking Thanksgiving Celebrations: Native Perspectives on Thanksgiving- This section explained how to honor the native people that were involved with the first thanksgiving, not by dressing up in stereotypical indian dress, but celebrating their traditions and values. 'It is important to include accurate details, be tribally specific, and practice cultural sensitivity when teaching about Thanksgiving.'

This reminds me of how American literature portrayed 'black people'. They never mentioned where they were from in Africa, only that they were black. It is important to include all of the details when portraying any people group.

Impact on student education- I think the most important thing to take away from this lesson is that we should try extra hard to understand someone, no matter where they are from. We should not jump to conclusions about race or religion based on our own personal biases. We need to truly work at understanding someones background if we are to respect someone wholly.
