This will give you a general idea what's happening.

2) Now go to Flipgrid and listen to me read some of Chapter 2 out loud. https://flipgrid.com/6db0e192
You can post English questions here if you want and you will also record in English your impressions about reading in a second language.

So far in La Guitarra Misteriosa we know that Steve and Jennie met on a flight to Mexico. Steve is going to Mexico City to visit his cousins, Jenny is going to Guadalajara to study as an exchange student to study music. Jenny brought her guitar with her for that reason. They plan to write to each other and maybe even visit each other during their stay. After they land, Jenny has to wait for her luggage and guitar. When she picks them up, they seem heavier than before. They both say goodbye.

In chapter 2, Jenny gets a taxi to take her to the train station. They talk about various things along the way. At the train station, Jenny buys a magazine and checks in her luggage and guitar. When she arrives in Guadalajara, Raquel and Cristina--the oldest daughters of the Prado family--the family she will be staying with for a year.

Think about your process of reading so far. Take note, that not every detail is important to the story line. In chapter 2, for example, Jenny basically gets a taxi, rides a train and arrives in Guadalajara. So don't sweat it if you don't know every word. Soon you will get a feel for what words you might need to look up, and which words you can kind of skim by, making an educated (or intuitive) guess.

Read Chapters 3 and 4.

Read chapters three and four: 1) First, look at the titles: "Una sorpresa" and "Una llamada telefonica" (a telephone call) and guess what the chapters might be about. 2) Now read the chapters quickly--but with intention--taking note of parts that are confusing. What was the surprise that Jenny encountered? If you know this, you know the gist of chapter two. What was the telephone call about and what was the result of it? If you know this, then you know the gist of chapter three. 3) Now read the chapter again more carefully, maybe looking up a word here and there (but not every word, or all the fun of reading will disappear quickly.)

Quizlet Question/Answer.

Now go to Quizlet and click on the listening icon to hear a heritage speaker ask and answer questions to chapter 3 and 4:

https://quizlet.com/40257181/la-guitarra-misteriosa-chap-1-4-questions-flash-cards/

Chapters 10 and 11 might be a bit more difficult to understand with the first read, for two reasons. First, simplified writing can sometimes be more confusing because the narration does not flow as you would expect, and second, there are more new words in this chapter. But there are exciting things happening. If fact, some of the events do not bring us closer to solving the mystery.

Chapter 10, "Mas noticias" begins with Jennie and Requel, and Christina in the music store talking to the clerk. Remember, they are explaining why they have this guitar and that there is something in it that they want to get out, but don't want to wreck the guitar. Jorge is parking the car and will bring in the guitar in just a moment. While Jenny waits for Jorge, she looks around in the store. Here are some of the things she is thinking:

"Por eso (Jennie) sabe que en una tienda como esta, no es posible regatear." regatear means to haggle for a price. In other words, this is not a store where you can haggle for a price.

"Jennie mira un periodico..." periodico is a newspaper. What does Jennie read? When she tries to point out what the newspaper says, Cristina ignores her and says, "tenemos que abrir la guitarra..."

Chapter 11 is called, "una tarjeta de negocios" which means nothing more than "a business card." You will have to decide if this is a clue or not. But the chapter begins with the girls going to look for Jorge. Cristina is the snoopy one, actively searching for clues. Requel mostly asks, "?Que hacemos?" What happens and what do the girls end up doing?

Step 02

WHAT I DON'T LIKE ABOUT PROGRESSIVE TE

Let me tell you why I do not like this chapter--it introduces progressive tense. I never teach progressive tense until the end of second year Spanish, or maybe third semester, after students have a strong understanding of present tense. The reason why I wait, is because beginning students always, always, start using this tense incorrectly. This is because this verb structure is patterned like English, so English-speakers transfer their English knowledge and misuse this tense in Spanish. Let me explain:

Present Progressive Tense uses ESTAR and present participle. In other words, you will be communicating the action "---ing": I am eating, Are you reading? etc. The CRITICAL MISTAKE in usage, is that present progressive used way less frequently in Spanish than it is in English. It has very limited usage, but in English we use it quite often.

1.For example, if you wanted to say "Eating is important", in Spanish you would use the infinitive, "Comer es importante." (Spanish infinitives can translate as "ing.")

2. If you wanted to say, "I am studying Spanish" and mean that you are in the process of studying it over a long period of time. In Spanish you would use present tense, "Estudio espanol." So, when do you use present progressive in Spanish then?

1. If you the action is happening right then and there

AND

2. If you want to emphasize the action taking place.

To illustrate, you are trying to study and your little brother comes in and starts talking and won't stop. You say, "¡Estoy estudiando!", or "I am studying" (right now!). You are studying at this very moment AND you want to emphasize the fact.

You will never use progressive tense in Spanish in the following instances:

"I'm going on a walk today." (You are not on the walk now and you are not emphasizing the action, so do not use progressive.)

"Skating is fun." (Do not use progressive in Spanish--you would use the infinitive.)

"I'm taking Spanish." (Do not use progressive in Spanish--this is a process happening over the semester.)

"I´m eating clams.¨ (Even if the clams are on the plate in front of you, if you do not want to emphasize the action, use present tense.)

If you know this, you know the gist of chapter three. What was the telephone call about and what was the result of it? If you know this, then you know the gist of chapter four.

1. You may have noticed that this novel is full of infinitive constructions. If you haven't noticed, start to be aware of grammatical constructions:

[La policia dice] "acabamos de recibir informes de una pelea aqui."

La policia empieza a trabajar muy pronto.

Jennie trata de abrir el estuche.

Cristina dice, "tenemos que abrir la guitarra en seguida."

El padre le dice a su esposa, "no puedo creer que le dijiste a ese musico adonde fueron los muchachos."

2. In chapter 12 you will find out what happened to Jorge.

The police will also get into the picture because someone alerted them to a fight (PELEAR=TO FIGHT, UNA PELEA=A FIGHT (NOUN) Take time to think how you would conjugate this verb.

3. If you know the answer to these three questions, then you understand chapter 12:

--How do the police help Cristina, Raquel y Jennie?

--What did Cristina tell the police, and how did they respond?

--As the police call back to headquarters to report what Cristina had told them, they suddenly receive a call over their radio. What do the police have to do now?

4. Now read chapter 12.

Step 02

1. Before reading Chapter 13, what do you think about Roberto Gonzalez? Is he the good guy or the bad guy? Has he committed a crime? More than one?

2. Some words you might want to know:

ayudar=to help, to give aid

merecer=to deserve

gritar=to yell

3. There is only one real action in this chapter. Do you know who goes with the police and where the police are going? If you do, then you know the main action of the chapter

4. Now read chapter 13

Go to this link and listen to the first Article of Faith in Spanish. First you will hear an introduction. The first article of faith starts at 18 seconds. Listen several times and especially to the voweling: https://www.lds.org/scriptures/pgp/a-of-f/1?lang=spa#listen=audio

It's important that you practice cognates with a Spanish pronunciation, not English.

2. Now practice a bit then record yourself. Listen to your vowels. Are they pure A, E, I, O, U? Later I will have you send me a recording, but for now, use this time to practice.

Close your eyes and see if you can recite the first article of faith. Then look below to see how you did: 1-Nosotros creemos en Dios el Eterno Padre, y en su Hijo Jesucristo, y en el Espíritu Santo.

Now go to the link below and listen to this link called "Esta es la Iglesia." You will not be able to understand all of the Spanish, in fact, you will be able to literally understand very little. But there are other ways of understanding. Look at the pictures, listen to the tone of voice, read the words. Listen a second time for specific words. Look for words that might be familiar to you because you are starting to learn the Articles of Faith. The video repeats "Esto es..." and shows different scenes. It starts with "Esto es una capilla" (this is a chapel). Listen for other words after "esto es..." himno, pensamientos, amar, amar a dios, fe, perdón, religión, religión organizada, etc.

https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/media/video/2018-01-4200-this-is-church?lang=spa&collectionId=d147e1a2dcc8476e9b2527d9eccf4c8b

Segundo Artículo de Fe: 2-Creemos que los hombres serán castigados por sus propios pecados, y no por la transgresión de Adán.

Listen to a heritage speaker: https://www.lds.org/scriptures/pgp/a-of-f/1?lang=spa#listen=audio

Now practice the second article of faith with pure vowel pronunciation.
