Ecosystem Description

The ecosystem of Hawaii's islands consists much of tropical forests and mountainous ranges. The forests are lush and full with vegetation and terrestrial animals. Here it is very humid. In contrast the mountain ranges hold very little vegetation. These areas are a dryer heat where the plant life is more reminiscent to that of more grass plains, however the soil composition is more rocky on the surface.

Of the organisms listed in the food web there are many different relationships. Many are typical predation relationships such as the Io predating on the Rabbit or mongoose, or the the Jackson's Chameleon consuming the bee, or herbivore relationships, such as the Chital eating Milo plants, or the Rabbit eating Kou plants. There are also forms of

Mutualism, where the bee pollinates the Kou, and gains their nectar in return. Or commensalism where the Chameleon lives in the Papala and it is unaffected by the presence. Competition is also common, where the Pueo and Io will both compete to consume the same organisms like rabbits or small mongooses. Unfortunately parasitism also exists here. Dog ticks will latch onto most anything it can suck blood from.

Bumblebees are a very significant organism here. They will fly around and pollinate much of the ecosystem's plants allowing them to grow and reproduce.

A second potential would be Agaricomyetes and other fungi because they are decomposers. They break down the dead organisms returning them into the environment, without them there would be a lot of dead organisms lying around.

The Small Indian Mongoose is a small mammals that are omnivorous. They originated from Iran, India, and Myanmar. These organisms were brought to Hawaii by settlers who had a severe rat problem. It was brought in to eat these rats. Now on the island. They also eat insects, plants, bird eggs, and small amphibians and reptiles.

When the Mongoose was introduced the rat populations declined significantly. They managed to not become severely harmful to the environment. They filled into a niche not yet filled by any other organism as an opportunistic feeder. Their introduction was beneficial because they balanced the once overwhelming number of rats on the islands.

The main problems that might arise by their introduction might be they could eat too many of the small cold blooded organisms lowering their populations too severely. This could create in influx of insects that they consume, however Mongooses being opportunistic would be able to eat these as well.
