Each night after talking to the young boy Plop goes on little adventures talking to those he meets about the dark.  Plop begins to appreciate the dark and is no longer afraid, deciding that he will be a night bird.

  • Role play - Children can do role plays of the children in the book and their different behaviours and personalities.  Discuss if they think the behaviour of the children is good or bad.
  • Pick one of the characters from the book and discuss the appearance and personality.  Create a word bank as a whole class and use words to write  2-3 sentences on the character.
  • Design a poster to advertise the new chocolate that Willy Wonka has created. As a whole class activity you can discuss ideas and create the chocolate and it can be as imaginative as the class choses.

  • Children can compose a letter to the queen.  The letter will be to address the Queen requesting her to please help Ahmed find his parents and to have them reunited.
  • Freeze Frame Strategy.  As a whole class discuss what it would be like to be a refugee and have to leave your home country.  Ask the children to freeze frame an emotion they would feel leaving behind their home.
  • Role play debate. In pairs children take the role of either the parent or child. They need to argue their standpoint of why they want to go to Buckingham Palace to help their friend. The role of the parent need to reason why the children should not go to the Palace and should stay in school.
