I have issue with metrics/data that rely on performance standards set by a colonial system. Do we measure success only in test scores and graduation rates? What is 'success' exactly? Who decides?

I loved hearing Kelly Dobos speak. As much as I value speakers with academic backgrounds, a student speaker allows for a more direct peek into the lives of students we will teach in the future. Earlier in the session Denise Augustine spoke about orienting ourselves and I felt like Kelly helped me orient myself to the importance of Indigenizing my practice to allow all students to flourish so other students don't have to face the racist stereotypes that Kelly has experienced.

I am currently inquiring "how does connection to place by means of personalizing study space alter student attitudes toward learning?"
The secondary school student, Kelly, emphasizes the space in which she felt welcomed in-at home even-is not the conventional classroom we think about. Rather, the space fostering connection contains both meaningful social and physical weaving. However, the conventional classrooms I see are mostly absent of personalization and connection. Establishing connection, where a student feels safe, seen, heard, and respected, in my opinion, forms their willingness to learn. However, when I look at the current structure of a class, often there is lack of connection between the learner and their learning environment, the learner and teacher, and the learner's individual self. So what is important then?

I was so impressed with Kelly's honesty, clarity and confidence. She put creating a safe and nurturing environment in perspective for me and showed great courage in her story. I was touched by her accounts and her relationship with her teacher.
There was a part of the presentation when Denise had gone over ministry data which tried to represent how the gap between high school completion rates was closing over the last several. I agreed that the data is somewhat misleading and perhaps even more importantly self-serving for the ministry. It does nothing to measure efficacy of programs or attribute "success" to either the efforts of indigenous communities or results that can be attributed to government programs. It's still not enough to simply pat one another on the back and say, "job well done".
I thought that the presentation did a great job examining the circles of privilege to illustrate our own personal connection to one another. The image of the three eings is now etched in my brain (centre was privilege - inner circle - outer circle of outliers. It was a great representation that people (including myself) not only had privilege, but that they also posed barriers to those on the outside, looking to get closer to the centre. This is where the change needs to happen,... long ways away. I am grateful for the opportunity to participate.
