Key considerations for schools & educators

1.) The most critical thing, I believe, is that the leaders in the school foster a learning environment that is constructivist in nature and where the teachers, parents and school community truly believe that students bring their own unique perspectives, ideas and backgrounds to learning and that they can influence the curriculum with their questions and ideas. I see it being a real challenge if a teacher doesn't have this kind of belief at their core.

2.) The physical learning environment itself is increasingly important in fostering an environment in which students take ownership of their learning. Making a physical space warm, inviting, flexible and also reflective of the students should not be overlooked.

3.) The role of the homeroom teacher has never been more important. The teacher sets the tone for the homeroom learning environment, for the way students view themselves, for the ways students view others and for the opportunities that students have to reflect and learn from their experiences. Teachers need continuous, ongoing, collaborative and supportive guidance to ensure their spaces are positive places of learning.
