Hi! As usual, I didn't read the instructions well enough. You are looking for ideas only. But I know you are fluid. The past two mornings, I drew. I couldn't help but include squirrels as this is the view of our backyard. They are so busy but when someone goes outside, they are in this stealth position. So funny. I would imagine they may be incognito to an extraterrestrial as well.

Hi Henrik. Thank you for a FANTASTIC assignment. I was very nervous about it before I started, because I didn't know how to approach it. I started with an idea of funny portraits. After a day of drawing I realised it was a weak idea. I then decided to raid my Seeded Notebooks (I have made quite a few since taking your class) to see what I could come up with. Here are a few pages, together with the draft of a Preface for the diary.

I am battling with the writing on each page. I have 2 problems. Firstly, what to write, and secondly, how to include it on the page. I could do comments like on these pages, or use words to show his confusion or make it into a narrative. As far as putting the writing on the pages, I will experiment with different ideas. I think I have come up with a solution to my writing problem. I am going to include all the descriptions in the Preface, and then use labels on the images. I am going to cut the writing out of magazines which will make the fonts and colours all different. I will give this a go, and see if it works.

Hi Henrik. Here is my moodboard. I decided I really needed to imagine what it was that was making the diary. The moodboard gave me a sense of 'person'. I also came across 'The War of the Worlds' by H G Wells. I have never read it, but will be getting it out of the library next week. The musical album by Jeff Wayne I had listened to many decades ago, so I revisited that as well. I really loved the images that came up when I searched for War of the Worlds. And the paintings of Hieronymus Bosch just popped into my head. I don't know what it is about them, but they have an alien feel to me. So I included them in my moodboard too. I am not a sci-fi fan, and that is why I was a bit nervous about this assignment. But it has been fascinating doing the research and thinking about extraterrestrials. Hi Henrik. I gave a lot of thought to the text. I even created my own alien language, but obviously it was unreadable and I thought it detracted from the images. I wanted the focus to be on the pictures, and I really liked the idea of using text cut out from magazines to give different fonts and perhaps interesting words. By using simple labels in the images I made them part of the visual language. I decided to keep the same simplicity in the Preface and Cover to give the book a cohesive look.

Thanks again for a wonderful assignment. You really got me thinking about a lot of things.

The work you’ve been doing looks incredible! Tomorrow, I’ll briefly review your submissions before introducing our next project: Shut Up! This is a visual storytelling challenge aimed at capturing the essence of someone or something that just won’t stop talking.

I’ll be showing a few dummies I’ve made alongside some completed books. Plus, for those interested, I’ll be giving a short lesson on Coptic binding—one way you can package your Alien Diaries. Thank you for providing a Padlet page for this class. I regret not being on Facebook because I miss out on seeing everyone's work, which is something I always enjoy. But seeing examples in the Zoom session was really inspirational and I learned a lot from everyone. My visitor is pretty confused about humans (as am I). I had a lot of fun with this and think I'll likely make more beyond the assignment. As I saw today, there are vastly more possibilities to explore. I'm coming out of a multi-year artist's block and definitely need to get back to physical ink, paint and paper, so that's my self-assignment going forward.

The pretzel one was my first attempt...I was traveling and didn't have a lot of free time to draw, but that's sometimes a good thing, keeps me from over-thinking and over-working things. But I'm trying to do better about drawing in all of those odd moments, instead of letting them slip away into the air.

On a personal note, I did the jogging one right after talking a walk two weeks ago along the French Broad River in Asheville. There were joggers, walkers, people riding bikes everywhere, everyone just enjoying a beautiful day (I wish now I'd drawn more of the scene).

Since then, of course, Western North Carolina (along with the whole multi-state region) has been devastated by Helene. We live two hours east and so we are fine, though it was an epic storm, even here. I know they have a strong spirit in Asheville and they'll recover, but it'll take years, so keep them in your thoughts.

Hi everyone, the stuff on facebook is looking great , i dont see any here on padlet, I will be adding comments to all the work on Facebook and any posted here as well, I’d like to focus on 5-6 projects during our next session leaving time for a demo and intro to the new assignment.

I notice that some people have trouble creating a linked narrative, try to expand on your favorite image, tie them together by repeating patterns and symbols.

Hi Henrik. Firstly, I must apologise for not being at the Live Zoom lesson. I am really sorry but I am unable to attend the Live Zooms.

About my background, I have done Fine Arts for a long time, but for the last few years I have been trying to make the transition to Illustration, because I am interested in making Children's Picture Books. So I have taken quite a few online Illustration courses to try and help me. My layouts are a problem because I still think in terms of focal points and filling everything in.

I saw a man watching TV while the TV was watching him watching TV. Kinda like how Netflix and all the others do in real life.

I did several sketches but most missed the mark. I'm only now sort of figuring out how to flip the narratives as intended. Good for my brain to be asked to do this, though. Also, trying to work fast with real ink and paper and to not worry over them too much. I´ll keep trying.

Hi Henrik. Here are my finals. My initial idea was to work in ink. I was very inspired by the illustrations of Tomi Ungerer where he does an ink drawing and then adds a strong block of black. I tried this but it looked a bit weak with my images. I tried adding colour, but that did not work either. I then switched to pencil crayon on grey paper for the drawing, and when I uploaded the drawings it morphed into this look. I tried handwriting, but this seemed to work better, and I think ended up with a bit of a comic feel which I liked. I wanted to keep it looking messy, so left a lot of the marks to give it a bit of a handmade look. I also wanted to change the pace in the book so did 2 double spreads for variation. I found this when I was doing research for Project #4. I think my book will be about an imaginary anatomy, and so not literal, but in any case it's fun (for me, anyway) to check out all this stuff. I used to have a book like this from my great-grandfather's library, but it's long since vanished. Hi Henrik. I decided to redo my I Saw project because of your comment that the drawings were better than the final ones. I fully agree, but I thought it was a bit of a cop out to just use the drawings for my project, because they did not take very long. Folded guide to the Inside Parts of a Space Monster. I made the diagonals the wrong way at first, which was typical for me. The video was very clear about how to do this, so it's just my brain malfunctioning. Plus it's been a while since I last made one of these. Anyhow, it works perfect now. I want to do lots more of these for future projects.
