The film's setting is realistic, but since novel films have to assume the setting based on the descriptions of their source material, the depiction can be different as long as it follows the original concept of the book. The 2013 depiction of The Great Gatsby, although features pop cultural references from the early 21st century and portrayal of the event is certainly exaggerated, it followed the book more closely on each individual event from the short novel. And it's also narrated, which is a nice touch. The older version had more realism to what Gatsby parties were actually like, the book over exaggerates the parties most likely. My opinion might be like this due to the advancement in technology that I think the 2013 version looks lavish and extremely over the top, the newer film definitely is more true to the books expectations while the older film was more realistic.. .
