The Choctaw and the Cherokee tribes have been fairly peaceful tribes in the past. It’s no secret that Native Americans have a very serious attitude when it comes to their land, so it isn’t a surprise that disputes will arise over the ownership of land. Many sunsets ago the Choctaw tribe discovered a field of land between their grounds and the Cherokee grounds. The Choctaw believed that this land belonged to them but when they attempted to claim it, the Cherokee became angry and tried to explain that the land belonged to them. Neither tribes wanted to settle the dispute through war so they decided on a less fatal option, stickball. Stickball is a Native American sport that is often used to settle disputes peacefully and in a fair way.

Each Tribe chose their best player to represent them and formed a team. Both tribes decided it would be best to play the game on the land they were disputing over. After a few weeks of preparation, the day had finally come for the game to take place. The medicine man came and invoked the proper blessings and everyone was ready to start playing. The game was started by the Choctaw gaining one point after hitting the pole. The Cherokee then scored nine points by hitting the wooden fish three times. The game went back and forth for three days and was very close but in the end the Choctaw took the victory with a total of 74 points.

Definition of Wampums, “a quantity of a small cylindrical beads made by North American Indians form quahog shells, strung together and wond as a decorative belt or other decoration or used as money.” as stated in the Dictionary. The Natives use this hard earned currency to trade for daily objects. Sooner or later, more and more European Settlers got note of the true value of Wampums, they decided to join in on all the fun. As Natives searched days and nights for their clams and shells just to go back home to carefully make each bead from the beautiful shells. Europeans began to make Wampums into their own currency as well. With that being said, Wampums became our first official currency.

As time went by, Wampums grew in popularity and one day Europeans have decided to create a savings composition called a “bank”. Where everyone from Cape Cod South to New York had access to. As the banks opening day was getting closer as time passes by, all the Native tribes were excited to deposit all their Wampums to keep them in a safe and sound place. On opening day on the 27th of August, a family of hard working Native Americans walked into Cherokee State Bank to deposit their Wampums and make an account. Unfortunately, the banks’ clerk that was behind the desk rejected the families currency because they, “were counterfeit,” as stated by the banks manager. “Why can’t we deposit our Wampums when Europeans can?” asked a native mother walking in with her family. She was responded with silence. One male shared his important opinion, “we spend hours of our days to scavenge and carve our wampums in the ocean, how can they possibly be counterfeit, why are we being treated like total savages.” Everyone is asking questions yet there are no answers to be found. Are the wampums counterfeit or is there a discrimination party involved?

At dawn, in the Native American village, a tribal ceremony took place. Tribal ceremonies in the Native American village include various games for entertainment. These games bring people of the village together. Games like hand game, involves hiding bones or even sticks under hands, shifting them back and forth, and opposing teams have to guess where the bones or sticks are, teaches focusing and paying attention. Ring The Stick game also teaches about the importance of having a dream and goal. Ring The Stick game includes a long stick with the string on one end and a ring on the other side. The goal of the game is to catch a ring with a pointed end of the stick. One of the Native American men from the village said, “Not only are kids of our village playing games, adults and even elderly play them as well. Playing games brings luck and good harvest.” Games are played not only for entertainment but also to drive away evil spirits and bring good energy into the mind and body. Another popular game called, The Double Ball Game, was played among females. The goal of The Double Ball game is to pass a double ball from stick to stick to the goal post. The strongest women achieve a high status. One Native American woman who played that game said, “We play games to prove our strength and agility.” Natives love to spend their free time with their family and village neighbors doing amusing and alluring moves. Playing games is only one of the many entertainments that Native Americans have. They also enjoy music, which they believe is the language of the spirits, as well as traditional dances. Usually, Native American songs start off slowly but pick up tempo later into the song. The difference in Native American culture and traditions, makes them stand out from the rest and be unique.
