"Her Kind" by Anne Sexton reveals a theme of femininity. It is clear throughout the poem that the author is struggling with being what the definition of a "woman" is. In the first stanza, she compares herself to a witch, implying that she is different from what a woman should be. In the second stanza, the author implies that she has tried taking on a motherly role, as is expected of a woman. The last stanza seems like she is saying she is not ashamed to not fit society's expectations.

Themes, tone, symbols: the "woman" she repeatedly relates herself to IS herself. The poem is liberating, in some sense. Evidently, this woman does not fit societal expectations, particularly expectations of the time period (18th century or so). When she claims she is misunderstood, for example, we see that she is confident in her identity, but others do not perceive her in that manner. The poem highlights an eternal battle between who she is and who she is expected to be.

"Her Kind" is a poem that is full of rich feminist themes. Within its feminism, there is a discussion of contrasting roles, liberation, and freedom from restrictions. Much like a witch, she doesn't feel tied to the normal.

I think a theme of going against the norm is present, since the "kind" the narrator is talking about live away from society, and aren't subject to the same rules of the time period, such as exposed arms when overly concealing clothing was the norm of the time period. It emphasizes independence and freedom as well.
