  • The channel of conversation used in a clockwork orange has a hidden message. It is mentioned how the society in a clockwork orange does not know how the youth acquired argot. Hitherto our society is also uncertain how our youth learned slang. It is believed that in making the argot Russian, Anthony Burgess warns his readers of what humanity may become if it is totalitarian. 
  • Alex also uses language differently when speaking to different people (he does this to manipulate).
    • Example: Alex uses Nadsat when speaking to Dr. Brodsky and Dr. Brodsky replies saying that it is "quaint".

  • Nadsat is used as a personal code for communicating amongst the teenagers. Alex and his 'droogs' use this fictional slang to confuse the people around them as well as the readers. The teens use Nadsat to express their individuality as well as to separate themselves from the rest of the world, giving them a sense of uniqueness and independence. Lastly, the Nadsat code that Alex and his droogs use can be seen as a representation of the teenagers immaturity that they display throughout the novel.

    "Our pockets were full of deng, so there was no real need from the point of view of crasting any more pretty polly to tolchock some old veck in an alley and viddy him swim in his blood while we counted the takings and divided by four, nor to do the ultra- violent on some shivering starry grey-haired...."

  • By using language that the reader cannot immediately understand, the author introduces us to a world we aren't familiar with. 
  • Moreover, the use of Nadsat immediately alerts the reader to the fact that everything isn't as it seems and that the characters find themselves in a time, society and setting which is vastly different from the England we know today.

  • The author uses these different styles of language to distinguish between the different character groups like the adults and the teens. 
    • Example:
    According to the article, Dr. Brodsky says that the language Alex uses is "quaint." Then, he asks his partner, Dr. Branom, if he knows anything about its provenance. "Odd bits of rhyming slang," Dr. Branom answers, with "a bit of gipsy talk, too. But most of the roots are Slav. Propaganda. Subliminal penetration", this indicates that there are differences between the character's language use, the doctors are literate and the teen boys are not so literate, so they found other words to use instead of formal English.

  • Burgess uses Nadsat as a "brainwashing" device. He explains that a glossary would defeat the purpose and nullify the brainwashing idea. The novel was to be an exercise in linguistic programming, with the exoticisms gradually clarified by the context.

    An example of brainwashing in the novel is a famous scene in which Alex is brainwashed by being strapped to a chair with his eyes forcibly kept open. Alex is then forced to watch hours of violent scenes while Beethoven's Ninth is playing in the background.

  • The Slavic words used may signify communist dictatorship where there are no moral values or hope. 
  • Burgess makes the argot Russian warn readers of what society may become if it communizes along soviet lines.
  • In the novel we clearly see Burgess's rebellion against brainwashing and political suppression. 
  • The titel 'A Clockwork Orange' represents a depersonalized system, which creates identical individuals forced to obey mechanical laws.

    Ludovico Technique: It seems as if the government is doing society a favour by eliminating violence in criminals. 
    In reality brainwashing is a warning against the dangerous control of the human mind.
