“This I Believe” essays remain deeply relevant today as they encourage reflection on personal values. It offers comfort and purpose in this modern, rapidly changing world. While the Cold War era was marked by fears of nuclear conflict, today’s teenagers confront uncertainties like climate change, social inequality, and the pressures of social media. These challenges can feel overwhelming, and turning to core beliefs such as the importance of kindness, resilience, or community — can provide a grounding sense of direction. By identifying and sharing beliefs, people can connect across differences, find meaning amid chaos, and navigate an uncertain future with hope and resilience.

Each person has a moral compass that exists within our conscience to guide us to make decisions when facing crossroads. Many of ‘This I Believe’ essays provide invaluable insights on life that were accumulated through life experiences by various differing people from all walks of life. This is particularly helpful as reference or guides when building our own moral compass as we navigate life. In the 21st century, morality has fallen into a grey state where the fine line between good and bad, justice and vigilantism etc. have been smeared and faded like ink on white paper, many of us are confused as many morally unrightful acts are now considered ‘acceptable’ as we all turn a blind eye to it. Listening to voices from the past might be just what we need to reflect on what we believe in now as a society and building our own moral compass.

“This I believe essays” can still be relevant today, as I think that expressing your own views about how your belief can guide you the way you live your life is something that people should do more nowadays. Take a stroll down the secondary schools in Hong Kong, many of these teenagers are looking super stressed about their school and academic work, fearing about their future career or friendship problems, some might not only be stressed, but also have different uncertainties, for example : their height and looks, that they are dealing with. Writing these essays can help them seek comfort through their beliefs by finding the target audience that relates to the writer the most and the teenagers will find a comfort zone where they feel safe in to say their beliefs or value that guides the way they live their life, whether it is a good or a bad belief.

I wouldn’t say it’s a must, but a belief which people follow and trust in is an essential element of life. A belief could lead us when we are miserable by the challenges or difficulties that we faced in our everyday lives which also accomplishes everyone of us in being a better self. Reading other people’s stories and sharing definitely promote a more developed thinking of ourselves since we are able to understand many different beliefs, that works as core values, would be useful and efficient us in our logic of thinking and interactions with others. Everyone is unique, so it is not a must for you to follow the beliefs of others, but try to develop your own values and beliefs which would lead you to success hand becoming a better and happier version of yourself. Moreover, identifying others’ belief and connecting with your own belief would help you to collaborate with others’ more easily.

There are many beliefs nowadays, for example, Believing in Buddhism, Christianity or maybe some other ‘ Worships’ Like K-pop groups. As a Christian, I seek comfort by praying and also worshipping K-pop idols. (Although it’s forbidden in the 10 Commandments, but that’s not talk about that) I think believing in something has both positive and negative impacts. I seek comfort by listening to my idol’s songs and watching their videos. But I have also been (overly) ‘Driving the economy’ of JYPE. Believing in Christianity is a comforting thing because we have a God inside of us and we wont be afraid of any uncertainties, which I think is enough. Fasting, As we know nowadays is not beneficial to our health. So as long as you don’t overly believe or worship something it will bring you positive impacts!!! Teenagers nowadays, face pressure and stress from academics and social media, their physical appearance and friendship problems. Daily reminder:: we are all unique, special and valuable and there is no need to compare ourselves with any other! Yayeyyyyy

This I believe essays remain relevant to modern times contributing to personal views.Well, before I start yapping my heart out, what exactly is a This I believe? For me It’s an efficient way to express our opinions, standing up for yourself and inspiring others as well.

Let’s start of with the modern days,We can still find many essays nowadays such as ones about religions, racial equality or LGBTQ+ rights. In my 14 years of life,I’ve seen numerous things related to this I believes, ranging from the bible and churches/the Quran and the Khaaba,to articles on racial equality, opposing racism, prejudice and discrimination to LGBTQ+ content creators expressing their views of being a transgender.Perhaps the most “overlooked” type of “This I believe” are the core values(Reverence, compassion, integrity, perseverance, wisdom, gratitude)and the MSS’s motto(The lord is my light) at our school.I have been in the Marymount community for around 9 years and every year we are taught about the importance of these and we usually create something relevant to them every year eg.the banners behind our classrooms according to the core value of the year in mss.

“This I believe articles” encourage others to express their views and experiences highlighting the social issues, fostering sympathy from readers, hoping that they can understand and relate,it’s a great way to express their thoughts and feelings from their experiences.Just like Edward R. Murrow,he expresses his concerns and thoughts on ww2,standing up for himself and all the others who suffered in this terrible time, while reading his essay I was able to strongly relate to him and feel sympathetic towards everyone who suffered. In this busy and chaotic world,we don’t really have much time to sit down and think about life nor beliefs, with the help of this I believe essays, they are the glimmer of hope, this inspiring light in the midsts of darkness allows us to express our own thoughts as well, enhancing our critical thinking skills as well!

Yes,we may not still be living in the 19th/20th century,we (thankfully) are not experiencing chaotic wars eg.WW2,the Cold War,but the meanings behind “This I believe” essays will still remain active, acting as an alert for everyone. These essays are still commonly found in the 21st century and are all around us and I also believe that it will be as common in the future.

This I Believe” is still a relevant and powerful essay even nowadays. Reminding us the importance of expressing and reflecting our thoughts and beliefs, this also encourages us to know more and explore ourselves and the world around us.

Nowadays, besides religious beliefs, some of us also believe or worship some new ideas. We trust in science, democracy, our idols. Some of them have been developed rapidly such as transexual, LGBTQ (homosexual), even though these ideas appeared a long time ago. They are now highly spread as people now are brave enough to rise up against traditional belief.

We can see the impact of “This I Believe” on this change, which means that we are able to express ourselves, to understand and get to know ourselves and the society deeply as we can hear these people's voices throughout this essay. “This I Believe” directly relates to our world until nowadays on making our voices heard.

In today’s age where teenagers are surrounded by the culture of social comparison, often filled with doubt and insecurities of physical beauty or intelligence, I believe that a belief or some sort of value to guide the way they live life still upholds it’s importance today.

Even if we’re no longer living through a Cold War, having a personal belief helps you to better brace yourself, to find your own answer to whatever challenges or moral dilemmas that may come your way. Your beliefs can provide hope during a rough time, guide your actions and decisions and help you prioritise different things that will in return, give you a greater sense of purpose in life.

This purpose in life you’ll gain can help you foster communities based on mutual beliefs, or create healthy debates which is a factor in creating relationships.

Overall, I believe that all people, famous or ordinary, should have some belief they uphold.

“We hardly need to be reminded that we are living in an age of confusion— a lot of us have traded in our beliefs for bitterness and cynicism or for a heavy package of despair, or even a quivering portion of hysteria.”

Edward Murrow saying this particular sentence in 1951 says a lot about the society— one’s beliefs are usually affected by others. Now that it is 2025, I suppose things are still the same, changing their own beliefs because of the fear of other people’s criticism or because of other’s actions.

In the broadcast, Murrow talked about some ‘commoners’ beliefs, and I interpret that as Murrow encouraging us to have our own beliefs but also understanding others’ beliefs as their own.

In this world nowadays, people have their own thoughts and somehow goes out their way to criticise the thoughts of others based on their own. But according to the broadcast, Murrow found help from listening to how others tackled their problems and their beliefs. Hence, they can still be relevant today.

“This I believe essays” are still relevant until this day. Not everyone believes in the same things, like traditions in different places. “This I believe” is used to express personal opinions that other people might not agree with. These essays let readers to understand things in a whole other perspective that they might not have thought of. For example, some people might not believe in ghosts, some might do, but by reading articles or reports about ghosts people might change their mindsets towards it. “This I believe” essays also are used to persuade people, like in nowadays nominees of any election might say “this i believe is why I will be the most suitable for this position” with a lot of facts in front to persuade people that he or she should get that position. “This i believe” essays are always seen in our daily lives nowadays, in different formats, a speech, a book, or even a news report.

In my opinion "This I Believe" essays are still important today as they help people share their deepest beliefs and values in simple, honest ways. These essays are able to help us focus on ideas and things that matter to everyone even the smallest beliefs, no matter where or when. In a world that everyone is busy and divided, these essays can remind us of what we all have or think in common.

Another reason why I think these essays will work well is that they are personal. Instead of huge ideas or complicated arguments, they allow others to tell real stories about real people. This makes it easier for everyone to connect and understand better. They also show many different perspectives, which helps us learn from people who have different lives and experiences than our own.

Finally, I think these essays can inspire action. When people share their beliefs, it encourages others to act on their own beliefs, whether by helping their community, standing up for what’s right.

How does This I Believe essays remain strongly relevant till this day? From a personal perspective, I strongly believe that everyone, no matter their spirituality or religion would have something they claim as their faith or motto.

This I Believe remains strongly relevant today due to its subject matter in dealing with personal values, fear and hope. In the essay, Murrow tapped into 'an age of confusion' from the cold war. Similarly, modern day anxieties about ongoing war conflicts, political polarisation and social issues such as feminism and violence among sexual minorities are on the rise and creating a greater atmosphere of despair and fear. By relating to Murrow's speech, the struggle can be shared, becoming remedial, despite the gap of time.

This I believe essays also allowed listeners to reflect and express. Murrow himself expressed his concern for the war and those in poverty, and by paving this path himself, the likeminded ones would began doing so, as a butterfly effect. What value do you strongly believe in? The response to this varies upon one another, but it is to collective agreement that no matter how it's interpreted, that certain value is a pole of hope and desire for a certain good. To state my point my explicitly, Murrow's This I believe is a missionary, to evoke and illuminate awareness and call for empathy for the undermined values of hope. And by doing so, the pillars of collective resilience for mankind under trauma is built.

To conclude, This I Believe remains relevant till this day due to its grasp of the timeless need in dealing with fear and cohering collective consciousness and resilience towards hope under troubled times, that remains flexible and evolving.

The " This I believe" essay could be still relevant today. Although the concepts and ideas were made long ago, it didn't mean that we couldn't use it for modern times. One of the descriptive paragraph specify that they lived in an age of confusion, which all of their beliefs were exchanged for despair. I could see this similar to modern times. As for not only the far distant age, this phenomenon have never changed, people that deeply trusted their believes are suffocated by the harsh truth, just as a piece of heavy wet cotton covering our nose and mouth, bringing pain and suffer. Thus, reading this essay could help relate to many issues and thoughts that were unnoticed but quite relevant.
