What I extracted from the video and from the text, was that Vygotsky places a lot of importance on culture, social interaction, more knowledgable others, and language on cognitive development. Although many of these are interrelated and each play a key role in development, I think the most significant factor would be more knowledgable others. This could include an older sibling, teacher, babysitter, parent, or guardian. MKOs are important in the cognitive development of a child because they set an example for all the other aspects of Vygotsky's theory. A parent could be an example for what is culturally appropriate, how to socially interact, and teaches their children language. A more knowledgable other has the ability to promote higher mental function by setting an example and bridging the gap between what a child can do, and can't do. The zone of proximal development is the stage in between what a child can and can't do, it is also when a child is most sensitive to learning new information. An MKO makes it possible to establish a zone of proximal development through language and example.
