Students will work in pairs to complete this assignment and then present their posters about recycling to the class. The informational and fiction books read while studying subtopic #1 will be available for the students to utilize to complete their assignment. <br>2. Students will create their own personal book bins from cereal boxes. Students can bring in one empty cereal box from home and boxes will be provided to students who do not bring one. The students will be given the opportunity to decorate these and use them to put their books in. <br>3. Although this may be ongoing, students will participate in a whole class discussion about ways we can use various recycled materials in the classroom. Then, the class will work together and we gather the necessary materials to carry out the ideas that were brainstormed. An idea could be using old socks as whiteboard erasers. </div>]]></description>

Now that students have a clear understanding of what recycling is and many aspects of recycling, students will work together in small groups to create a public service announcement (PSA). The PSA should include brief information about recycling, what can be recycled, and why recycling is important. Each group will take turns, over the series of a few days or weeks, to read this PSA on the morning announcements. <br>2. Students will work independently to create a Padlet discussed the 3 R's. Collaboration will occur between the classroom teacher and the technology teacher, as the activity can be completed in both classes. The students will then share their Padlets in small groups.<br>3. Now that students have learned the 3 R's, the students will make cars out of toilet paper rolls. The students may also reuse various additional items to construct their cars. The cars will then be placed in the hallway on display for the school to see.  </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>1. In this subtopic students will learn about the various negative impacts of not recycling. However, they will also learn about various negative impacts that recycling can have on the environment. Students will participate in an activity formulating an opinion on recycling being mandatory. Then, students will debate against one other student who has a different opinion than them and students will make their cases regarding their position on the topic. <br>2. Students will reuse various items to make bird feeders. Students can reuse various items, such as water bottles, string, and pencils. Students can bring these items home and use them at home to feed some birds. Rather than hurting animals with our waste, we will create things that they can use and help them out! <br>3. Students will work independently to create a Glogster post about the negative impacts that not recycling could pose on the environment. These Glogster posts should highly how animals and the environment are effected by waste and what steps people can take to ensure their waste gets disposed of properly. </div>]]></description>

As a whole class, students will contribute to building a water filtration system with much guidance provided by the teacher. Through this project, the students will learn how not recycling affects the water that we drink and students will also learn how to filter the water to make it cleaner. <br>2. As a whole class and with collaboration with various adults in the school, the students will work to start a recycling program in the school. There is currently no recycling problem in the school. Every Wednesday and Friday, students will go around to the classrooms during lunch to collect any recyclable items and properly dispose of them. <br>3. Students will work together to plant a garden. The garden will be used to highlight the importance of reusing various items that can be used in the garden. I intend to give the students guidance with this, but also a lot of freedom to make choices. <br><br></div>]]></description>
