         <description><![CDATA[<div>Rutherford was testing out Thompson's theory, and shot positively charged particles at a golden sheet. Most passed through, but some deflected or bounced back. He concluded that there was a large, dense, positively charged nucleus surrounded by empty space, with the electrons surrounding the empty space.</div>]]></description>
