I will encourage the student not to stop learning English and as much as possible practice speaking the language at all times at home or even at school. I will suggest to watch English movies or English educational videos as it can help her/him. Failing doesn't mean surrendering. Maybe it needs more hardwork and perseverance. -Janelle-

I would tell my student that failing is still a part of success. Human as we are, we fail. And that very time it happens, we also discover things we should really put more focus on which helps us do better the next time. I would set myself as an example, in a way that is motivating. This is for him to look back on his past accomplishments that he'd think "I was able to do it before, I can do it again," and let him rebuild his self-esteem. Learning is a lifelong process and failing is just a bump in the road which we all pass through on our way to success. - Maki

I believe that words of encouragement will work best in situations like this.

I will tell my student that everyone fails sometimes and this failure doesn't define us. In addition, I will also share strategies on how he can improve his English skills such learning new words everyday, reading books and listening to audios. On top of that, I will remind him/her not to forget to have fun while learning. - T. Rish

If my student failed the competency test many times. I will never discourage him instead, I'll encourage him and motivate him to take another exam. I will tell him that learning is a process and failure is part of learning. I would be willing to give him tips on what to do or what to prepare before the exam. - Erza <3

I would tell my student that it doesn't matter how many times you fail or fall down, but rather, how many times you stand back up again and continue. It is normal to fail for these types of examination test. Students may feel upset and disappointed or rather feel demotivated in learning the second language.

As a teacher, I would encourage him to read story books and even their "manga" to harness their reading skills to that it is easier for their reading comprehension. Also, watching English movies/animations are really helpful to visualize daily conversations and how to express ideas when communicating.

As a tutor, I will help them deal with their feelings about the failure by reminding them that everyone fails sometimes, and this one failure doesn't define them. Failing an exam is really hard to everyone. As a tutor, I also felt the same when I was still a student. So, whenever one of my students questioning himself/herself I'll remind him/her tthat everyone fails sometimes, and this failure doesn’t define them but it helps them to be the best in the next exam. In addition, I'll remind them that failure helps them learn their mistakes and it leads them to success, if time permits. I can also help them by giving some tips on how I succesfully passed my exams.

I'll encourage him by saying that this would not be the last and there will be next time. There will be a reason why you failed the test and I know that for the next test the result will shock you. Being a failure at first nor second or third doesn't mean you're not good enough maybe there's a hidden reason for that and you can do more better next time.

I will share similar experience where I failed multiple times and how I kept going and passed eventually. For me, I will be more encouraged if the person who gave me advice and encouragement had similar experience with the problem I am experiencing. I will also be more convinced to follow what he did to achieve the resolution of the problem. I believe the student might feel and do the same way. - Jannah

If my student fails his English competency test for the third time, I will tell him/her to just keep on studying and learning English because it is not the end. Failure is just a beginning that you'll keep on going forward in aiming for success. Continue believing in yourself and encourage yourself to be confident in everything you do so that soon you will realize that failure is just a stepping stone towards success.
