This digital age is new to all of us. I think as educators, as well as adults living in this world, we need to understand the implications of digital citizenship in our own lives. I also think many of our parents are not aware of the importance of digital citizenship for themselves or their children. Most parents probably think of the safety aspect, but not much else (we teachers are probably guilty of this as well). Our students are coming to us less prepared in many ways, but most are pros with technology, at least navigating it. I'd be willing to bet digital citizenship isn't brought up much at home. I also think students and parents need to see the positive (learning) impact social media can have on their children.

I can also see the problem of teaching a lesson (or few lessons) as a "box being checked off" rather than incorporating digital citizenship in our everyday life.

I have been hungry for more information about digital citizenship. The more technology we use with kids, the more opportunities there are for kids to NOT use it correctly if this topic is not always in the front of our minds in working with and planning everything we do with technology! If digital citizenship is not being considered when using with students, you are bound to come across a few bumps in the road... The more front-loading we do with digital citizenship being intentional and preventative, the more successful implementing technology with students will be!

I'm still learning.
I feel that teacher and students need to be aware of how to operate and use technology. Not just turning it on or logging in but fully understanding its usefulness and possible threats. I think too often we don't take it as seriously as we should. Students start learning at such a young age on how to operate a computer and know more of how to do things than some adults. It is important to use it correctly so it can be used effectively. I feel that there are so many great resources at our fingertips as well as students and taking the right avenues to get there is key. Making everyone aware of the potential dangers, red flags and correct avenues to navigate is crucial. As teachers we need to be able to educate parents on this so they can help their kids at home.

Maybe I don't get out much but I don't hear of many people offering how to educate someone on DC. I also don't think people realize what a concern it is. They might not think they need to be educate until they see or read exactly what it involves. This book is eye opening because the littlest thing in the digital world could explode and if precautions are taken then things could be prevented, but first the learning needs to take place.

I feel our biggest challenge is getting parents interested in understanding what digital citizenship is and why they need to take the time to learn it. Parents often times don't realize what all their child is doing on the computer and what different avenues they are taking while they are on it. Something I highlighted in the book because I thought it was well put was, "What if we recognized that if an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, then helping our children be responsible digital citizens is well worth the investment?"
Parents and teachers need to realize that it is worth the investment because our children are worth the investment.

Whether it's limited internet access or even a language barrier, there are always going to be challenges. That can't keep us from trying anyway.
Before reading this book, I never thought about how important it is to teach digital citizenship to only to the students, but to our staff and parents. We get on the internet more than once day and we need to know how to protect ourselves. We can benefit from learning more about digital citizenship daily.

Each categories are as important as the others. If I had an urgent need, I would say it would have to be relationships and communication. We do not teach students how to communicate properly via email, text message, or in other online spaces. This is a skill that needs to be exclusively taught. I believe the students would benefit from this.

As far as fourth grade's approach to digital citizenship we only covered to basics at the very beginning of the school year. Like keeping your passwords private and discussing copyrights and and internet safety. When we started research I reviewed copyrights and internet safety but it wasn't in depth like i probably should have done. After reading the book this coming up school year I would love to make it a continued on going focus throughout the year. I knew about the risk and rewards but I really never just sat and thought about the great impact from both sides.

She hit it right on! I think from my generation and up we are scared of the unknown of most things that are digital. Having a community based approach will help ease some discomforts.

With as much technology that we are using in the classroom, it is to use it safely and also make sure to teach them the ramifications of not using it in a safe and ethical manner. After having several students this year have issues with posting inappropriate and harmful things on social media, I think we need to start with students at younger ages. I agree that it needs to be a daily part of our technology instruction.

I think in 5th grade we are doing more with it because we use technology every day. It is probably not as in depth as is needed. Also, I think we take it for granted that we are in a walled environment for most of the time since we use mainly google apps. However, students are being encouraged to use other outside tools and games, and we need to make sure they know how to approach creating accounts and interacting on these sites in a safe manner.

I think a big challenge is time. Finding time in our busy daily schedule to make sure we include instruction on digital citizenship. As educators, our plates are very full with all of the academic and curriculum demands as well as social emotional, that it is going to be a challenge to find the time for teachers to integrate it within our instruction. I agree with Christian that many teachers will view it as one more thing to do, but I think we have to show them how to make it part of the natural instructional piece of using technology.
