- "Research has been revealing that reading and writing are used in very different ways in the different disciplines and that applying literacy in sophisticated ways in the disciplines involves unique or highly specialized skills." (ILA, 2015)
- I believe my strength as a teacher for this discipline will be my passion for the subject and my knowledge of it in general.
- Teaching students the sophisticated ways that disciplinary literacy is used in physics will be challenging. I'm nervous in my competency to do this, but I know with practice, time, and experience it will begin to become second-hand nature. I want to be as proficient at being a disciplinary literacy teacher as I am as a content teacher.

- "Scholars operating from any one of the disciplinary literacy perspectives work from the stance that to learn deeply in a subject matter, young people need to have access to the way that conventions of disciplinary knowledge production and communication can be routinely or more explicitly challenged and reshaped by other forms or practices of knowing; such knowledge gives young people the power to read critically across various texts and various disciplines." (Moje, 2007)
- In short, disciplinary literacy is the way experts in a given field participate in that field. It is the way they think, write, speak, read, and interact with one another.
- It is important for students to practice disciplinary literacy so that they are able to have a deeper understanding of the material for a given topic.
- This can only happen though by having teachers who also understand the importance of disciplinary literacy and who structure lesson plans to include practice in disciplinary literacy.

- When looking at future students’ readiness to learn content, disciplinary literacy will hopefully be able to provide a bridge for the students if they’re feeling unprepared.
- Instead of simply learning content they’ll learn how to participate in a disciplinary process to better they’re understanding which will allow them to become more ready to also know the content.

- "Students need explicit guidance in how literacy is used appropriately in the different fields, but this needs to be accomplished without any reduction in emphasis on the knowledge that students need to gain." (ILA, 2015)
- I am curious about how students will react to disciplinary literacy (writing) in science and math classes. I remember being in classes and being relieved that I didn’t have to worry about more writing outside of an english and reading class.
- Do students now have the same feeling that I might have?
- Will that cause them to grow more of a dislike for school?
- Or are they prepared for it now because times have shifted?
