The building of the Sao Paulo Art Museum known as MASP is one of the main works of modern architecture in Brazil, being one of the icons of the city's renewal. It was designed by the Italian, Brazilian nationalized architect, Lina Bo Bardi, in 1958, constituting her most important work. The history of the building begins when Lina Bo Bardi's husband, Pietro María Bardi meets Assis Chateaubriand in 1946. Bardi, journalist and art critic from Italy, together with Chateaubriand, lawyer, journalist and businessman who owns the Associated Diaries and Broadcasters Paulo propose to create a new museum of contemporary art in Sao Paulo.

Initially, MASP operated on the second floor of the Associated Diaries building, with an approximate area of 1,000 square meters, inaugurated on October 2, 1947. Bardi wanted to create a "living museum" and found in Brazil the perfect setting for his objective. Promoted by the Municipal Municipality of Sao Paulo, the building was erected on the site of the old Belvedere de Trianon, on Avenida Paulista. The historic gallery was completed with works by the French sculptor Degas, paintings by Van Gogh, Velázquez, Renoir, Goya, Ticiano and Picasso, among other artists, which Pietro María Bardi bought between 1947 and 1953 in Europe.
