I believe that after Alfred and James talked, Alfred finished school and got a job at who knows where, and James went to rehab and eventually he was cured and his life started over, got a job at Epsteins, and maybe it could be better than last time

This book made me think "If you work hard enough anything is possible, all the negativity is in your head'' I connect with Alfred because he wants to do good things and be great, but he's always being booed by the crowd and by people in his life like Major and Willis who don't know what its like to be him.

An iron pipe rammed into his stomach , turning his legs to rubber. He never saw the punch but he heard it thud against his ear and then a distant plop, like a stone splashing into the pool at the bottom of a sewer hole.
p.215-216
Elston Hubbard was a machine, the man was insanely stronger than Alfred, he was like a machine gun, powerful and fast. Alfred had to endure all of his punches that could be compared to freight trains into his face.

He moved numbly forward on stiff legs, Rivera's beady eyes stared at him over a bent nose. "Move, Alfred, for..." He walked right into it, a ton of concrete that slammed into his mouth. His arms flew up and he staggered backwards on his heels. The ice ball was gone. His legs felt like steel springs and his arms were whips.
p.171-172
Alfred had been nervous for his first fight and the nervousness had manifested and pulled him down during the fight, it wasn't until he got punched that he truly felt what it's like to be a fighter, now he could fight back.

Why did Alfred keep fighting after being beat up? why couldn't he just quit?
Well, Alfred has goals, goals that not only push him, but inspire him to do better, and one of his goals is to never quit, no matter how bad it gets.

Now having never been in a fight (thank god.) I can't understand completely what its like to be a boxer. but I do know what its like to try to do the best you can and sometimes you win and sometimes you lose, but there's always relief after its done, it feels good to accomplish things and it's weight off your shoulders.
