In the text of Ratliff's book "Every Song Ever", he describes this notion of closeness as something not visual but something the musicians feel. He compares it to the phrase "entrainment" and how these two musicians essentially become oscillating bodies with one another. this notion of closeness describes the feeling two musicians get when they connect with each other through music, when they can harmonize with each other and know the other persons next move. in the very beginning of the chapter Ratliff uses examples such as Earl Phillips, who has worked with such notable artists such as Jimmy Reed and Howlin' Wolf and the musical chemistry he is able to have with artists where he turns those gaps where the singer doesn't sing into a beautiful wholesome sounding part od the piece. Another example he uses are The Beatles to describe that there can be more than just two people, the Beatles being the group that sold the idea of musical closeness with four minds.
