The people who found Jamestown were called the Virginia Company. The Virginia Company were business owners. The first settlers had similar struggles like the Roanoke settlers. Captain John Smith forced the settlers to work hard. He said to the "Those who don't work, don't eat!" At the time John Smith was very injured. The hard winter was called "starving time" for the early settlers. Many settlers died cause of this terrible time. Hunger, diseases, and injuries also killed the settlers. During this time only 20% of settlers survived. John Rollfe planted tobacco in Jamestown in 1612. The tobacco inspired people into selling crops for money. The people who spoke against the Church of England would get abused or even die. A group called the Pilgrims wanted to stop England's beliefs on how people could go to church. A pilgrim is someone who makes a journey for religious reasons. The Pilgrims assumed that the churches wasn't going to make any changes with the law. They decided to go the North America. A ship called the Mayflower, left England and set sail in September 1620. 102 men, women, and many children got on the boat. During their voyage they went through some difficulties. They went through rough seas, hunger, and a deadly disease. When they arrived two months later they heard that winter was coming soon. Unfortunately, by spring, only half of the early settlers survived.
