My father is an African American born and raised in Florida he has over come many obstacles growing up being and African America. Growing up in the 60's he witnessed segregation first hand in elementary school. My mother was born in East Africa. She came to the United states to Pursue her education. She was the first in her family to come to the United States, since then she has earned her masters in social work. My mother is someone I look up to and want to be just like. She came to the United States all alone and accomplished something she thought she never would.Growing up in Utah has not been easy being an African American woman I am constantly being compared to stereotypes. I remember driving from Utah to Florida with my parents when I was younger. My father played brought a little collection of CD's with him. That ranged from gospel music to old school hip hop. It was in that little hatchback car driving across the country, My father made sure that we knew where rap and hip hop originated from he played us Rappers Delight after I heard that song I fell in love with music and wanting to listen to real music. My sister and I would spend summer in Florida and months at a time in Africa. Even though I was born and raised in Utah I speak Swahili fluently thanks to my mother. Now that I am an adult I continue to educate myself on as many cultures as I can by visiting different countries and cultures.
