The Aveiro lagoon (Ria de Aveiro) is a lagoon in Portugal. It is located on the Atlantic coast of Portugal, south of the municipality of Espinho and north of Mira (to the north of the Cape Mondego). Its average area covers approximately 75 km². It is named after the city of Aveiro, which is the chief urban centre located near to the lagoon. Other urban centres near the Ria de Aveiro are Ílhavo, Gafanha da Nazaré, Estarreja, Ovar and Esmoriz. Some beaches nearby include those of Barra, Costa Nova, Torreira, Vagueira, Furadouro, Cortegaça and Praia de Mira. There are also beaches in the São Jacinto Peninsula.\

The Aveiro Lagoon is beyond a mere geographical feature of Portugal. This 45-kilometer-long lagoon stands as one of Europe's last remaining untouched coastal marshland. It is also a haven for numerous bird species. The locals call this rich lagoon Ria de Aveiro. Tourism and aquaculture are the mainstay of the Aveiro Lagoon region. It is also renowned for its artisan fishing and as a center for the collection of Flor de sal, an expensive salt variety

A moliceiro is a small and typical pine craft with traditional propulsion to sail or pulled by a rope (but now commonly replaced by a motor), similar to a gondola, traditionally used by the fishermen of the Ria de Aveiro (District of Aveiro), in the northwest of Portugal: it serves or served originally for the transport of vegetables, collected from the seabed, of goods and livestock, but now it is above all a tourist attraction.
It is characterized by the colorful colors and the arched bow, which is usually decorated by the fishermen themselves with drawings that usually depict everyday scenes or the like, which must have a uniqueness character that distinguishes one boat from another.
The construction activity of these boats is a craft activity limited to the municipalities of Murtosa and Ílhavo and is handed down from father to son
The term moliceiro derives from the Portuguese moliço, a word with which the common jargon indicates a plant of any kind that grows in the seabed, and that was originally collected by the fishermen who used this boat, and then used in agriculture.

Where to Eat in Aveiro

Aveiro is a uniquely different Portuguese destination that historically grew due to its traditional fishing fleet and proximity to the ocean. This close connection to the water has strongly influenced the style of cooking in the region, which is predominately based around seafood. This guide will detail the best places to eat in Aveiro, where to eat on a budget and outline the local specialities that are worth sampling.

Fish Restaurants

Aveiro is renowned for its fish delicacies based on its historical marine agricultural heritage. Amongst these, Eel based dishes are one of the most popular with locals. There are three main dishes based on Eel; Eel stew, fried Eels and Eel with “escabeche” sauce.

Tourists should sample this delicacy in one of the restaurants within the Fish Market Square (Praça do Peixe). After tasting, fans of Eel meat can, even, pick up a locally tinned sample to take back home. Other seafood highlights include; Cod and Lamprey dishes all of which are widely sold in restaurants with the Fish Market square and the Rossio area.
For a fine dining experience try Salpoente, this is arguably the best meal in town with delicious seafood dishes beautifully presented. A full meal for two will range from €80 to €100 Euros. , Other great restaurants in which to enjoy the local seafood are Adamastor (upper level) La Cubata; O Batel and O Moliceiro. Meal prices can range from €10 to €30 per person and tourists will have no problem with translation as the menus are specified in Portuguese and English.
ontinental restaurants

Aside from seafood, Aveiro has a wide variety of other food options; from gourmet restaurants to pizzerias and fast-food eateries. For visitors looking for a special dining experience it is worth heading to Fusões. This restaurant serves excellent quality food, accompanied by the best Portuguese wines. It is a perfect spot for a special family dinner or romantic meal for two. For tourists looking for something more Italian, it is worth visiting La Mamaroma; an exceptional Italian-inspired restaurant that has great pizzas, pastas, and steaks. Prices range from €20 to €50 per person.

Budget dining

For those on a budget, who are looking for a great dining experience and Portuguese specialities there are still lots of options. Two top dining options are, Café Ramona; renowned for its traditional hamburgers and O Augusto; a restaurant that specialises in a distinctive local dish; Prego. A “prego” is an unusual tasting steak with chips and a fried egg. Meals at both restaurants range from €5 to €15 per person.

Budget dining

For those looking for a quick snack and drink, it’s recommended to pay a visit to Cais Madeirense or Adamastor (the lower level serves good beer and simple snacks). Both establishments are located in the Fish Market Square (Praça do Peixe). Also, fast food chains and snack bars can be found on the Forum Aveiro shopping centre.

Joana and Mendes were having a walk in Aveiro city and then they decided to have a trip on a moliceiro.
So they asked the moliceiro tour guide:
J- How much is a trip on a moliceiro?
L- It´s 10€ per person.
M- And how long is it?
L- 45 minutes.
J- We would like to do a trip.
L- Would you like to wait or can we start now?
M- Sure.
The trip started and the tour guide started talking a little bit about Aveiro city and it history.
L- Ria de Aveiro is a lagoon in Portugal. It is located on the Atlantic coast of Portugal, south of the municipality of Espinho and north of Mira . Its average area covers approximately 75 km². It is named after the city of Aveiro, which is the chief urban centre located near to the lagoon. There are very urban centres like Ílhavo and Gafanha da Nazaré and there are some beaches near by like Barra and Torreira.
M- How long is the lagoon ?
L- It extends for 45 kilometer-long.
J- What are the main activities?
L- The a pesca e a salinicultura
M- Can you talk a bit more about the moliceiros?
L- A moliceiro is a small and typical pine craft with traditional propulsion to sail or pulled by a rope, similar to a gondola, traditionally used by the fishermen of the Ria de Aveiro. It serves or served originally for the transport of vegetables, collected from the seabed, of goods and livestock, but now it is above all a tourist attraction.
J: Hmmmmm, interesting...................................
M- Look! From here we can see the "Saint Joana Museum", or must known as Aveiro Museum. The Museum of Aveiro is housed in the former Convent of Jesus of the Dominican Dominican Order. This convent, one of the oldest in Aveiro, dates back to the second half of the 19th century. XV, founded by D. Brites Leitão and D. Mécia Pereira.
The Princess D. Joana, daughter of Afonso V, enters this house in 1472. Here she leads a life of holiness, which leads to her beatification in 1693. The prestige of the convent was thus definitively associated with the presence of Princess Santa Joana and her religious worship.
From the XVI to the century XVIII, the building underwent numerous works of enlargement, improvements and artistic enrichment. The century XIX is marked by liberal ideals and its wide repercussions on religious life. By decree of 1834, the minister Joaquim António de Aguiar determines the extinction of religious orders in the kingdom. Its application is immediate in the male convents, allowing, however, the cloistered life in the female convents until the date of the death of the last nun. Thus, in the Convent of Jesus, the cloister remains until 1874.
L- That's right! In 1882, the building was handed over to the Third Dominican Order, which transformed it into Colégio de Santa Joana. With the implantation of the Republic in 1910, and the aggravation of religious intolerance, the community of Santa Joana College is dissolved. That same year, the monastery is closed and the church is classified as a national monument. The Museum of Aveiro is installed in the Convent of Jesus in 1911.
J- Oh, looks like our trip is ending... can you recommend us some place to have to have lunch?
L- Yes, of course, burt first I have a little gift for you! This is a tradicional Aveiro sweet snack called "Soft eggs", made of egg yolks and sugar. This mixture is often put inside of small rice paper casings in nautical shapes, such as shells, or into communion wafers.
J and M- *taste them* HMMMMM SO GOOD WE LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
L- You can take one box of 10! It's a present.
J- Thank you
L- Do you wanna eat fish or meat? I recommend a plate of fish, Aveiro is known for its fresh fish coming directly from the water.
M- Ok, we can try it.
L- For a fine dining experience try Salpoente, this is arguably the best meal in town with delicious seafood dishes beautifully presented. A full meal for two will range from €80 to €100 Euros. , Other great restaurants in which to enjoy the local seafood are Adamastor, La Cubata; O Batel and O Moliceiro.
