C&T 4052 SPR2020: Photos of Curriculum + Curriculum Review by Jacqueline Simmons

Take or find a photo of 'curriculum' and post here. This does not necessarily mean a picture of a curriculum document or a textbook. When selecting something to photograph, please consider the following questions and write a response to go along with your picture: 1) Where are the places/spaces where curriculum can be found? 2) What knowledge is prioritized? 3) Who decides what knowledge is privileged? 4) Who benefits from this knowledge? 5) Who loses or is left out? 6) What aims of education from the readings are represented?

- I believe this to be an example of teachers college effort of taking the null curricula in many institutions and Converting it into the formal curriculum. They opt for the inclusive language of “all gender” instead of coed, or men and women’s, etc. However, one could argue that teachers college is giving off a different message in their “hidden” curricula by not having all restrooms Contain the same inclusive language.-Garrett Tusler

This "all-gender restroom" can be found in Teachers College. I believe this is an example of informal/hidden and null curriculum. When people see this, it gives the message of promoting equality of gender bias and sexual discrimination. It is also a topic that is often not taught in formal curriculum. This kind of message does not only benefit LGBT people, but everyone because it is important to be aware of human rights and to promote equality for all.

There are a lot of study and working places in TC, and most of them comprise computers. It can be seen as hidden curriculum that students nowadays need to be familiar with technologies to learn well. In other words, it prioritizes the knowledge of technology no matter which subjects students major in. By the term 'technology', I also mean the skill in searching information on the internet. Consequently, students who have more resources such as internet and computers are more likely to develop tech knowledge, compared with students from the remote areas who do not even have computers in their schools.

Sorry this is sideways - no matter how I upload it, it will not change. I found this in a closet in Horace Mann that will cracked open. Literally, this was "hidden" from view. The message on this poster of the future coming first, shows that curriculum can be found anywhere were there are words (or even images) displayed. Teachers College is emphasizing here that they are educating students with the goal of making a difference in the future. But through the informal and null ways that this is enacted, there is a certain type of future that the school is advocating for. Emphasizing the future may also leave behind important study of the past and present.

What I love in TC is the inclusiveness. In my opinion, inclusion does not only mean to be aware of different languages, but also means to appreciate different products or aspects of different cultures. In 3rd floor of the library, there is an exhibition about Chinese calligraphy, ancient poetry, and photography which demonstrates the connection between Chinese food and African American culture. This is an example of hidden curriculum that cultures are interwoven, and they should be appreciated and respected.

We found these images and blurb in a hallway we’d consider somewhat peripheral at TC. Part of the informal curriculum of this exhibit, then, might involve which exhibits are placed in prominent locations around TC and which are placed in less prominent locations. Thus, perhaps TC prides itself on its unions and the diversity within them, but they might value other aspects of the university more. In addition, the text from the exhibit highlights “recognition” as a vital aspect of a person’s work experience--and the exhibit itself grants the union members recognition. It would seem to me though, that rights, equitable salary, benefits, etc. are more important aspects of union membership. Thus, it’s nice that this exhibit recognizes these employees for the work they do, but it doesn’t discuss how TC has worked with the unions to provide employees better wages, benefits, rights, etc.

(I'm having trouble uploading the pictures, but it seems like Ebony and Chelsea have it as well)

Formal curriculum is represented in the math intensive classes TC offers without significant tie-in of pedagogical approaches.
The informal curriculum is therefore: “If you know the math, you know how to teach the math.” This goes against what I believe to be true as a mathematics educator.
The null curriculum is the discussion about what higher mathematics does to influence secondary mathematics teachers when teaching secondary math. In other words, “How is the math we are learning benefiting us as teachers and more importantly, the students we serve?”

I walked over to the TC library and looked closely at the different spaces it offers. It is clear that TC values different ways of learning though this effort to designate both quiet and collaborative workspaces, as well as a range of technological resources. Additionally, within these spaces, there are options for sitting, standing and even moving on a treadmill while working. It offers a somewhat fixed collection of core knowledge, but allows learners to interact with it in a way of their choosing. By emphasizing who the space is built for, it also makes clear that there are groups in the larger community who cannot access these spaces.

We took this picture at the very entrance of TC. Printing this quote from John Dewey in huge font on the wall at the entrance demonstrates the value we hold as a graduate school of education. There's an apparent emphasis on "social progress and reform" in this quote, and it is held up in all classes I have taken here at TC. We have had discussions about how to facilitate societal progress, generate reforms, promote equality and equity in every class, instead of merely learning about how to "teach". This belief is recognized by founders and members of the TC community, and therefore has become an essential part of the TC curriculum.

I took this picture outside of the preschool classroom located in Horace Mann. In the picture, a silk fabric, made by parents and teachers in the school (words on the fabric are from teachers and those on flags are from parents), is presented on the wall. Those words convey the idea of what teachers and parents want children to obtain in the two-years study. With a closer look, words such as joy, wonder, inquiry, memories, be yours, passion, play, collaboration, fun, confidence, clam, etc appear multiple times. Such display shows personal beliefs and aims of what education should bring to/out of the children, which ideally should lead to further curriculum design, including all three types of curricula. Meanwhile, those words reflect what such population (I would say privileged) hope for/value while the discourse might be different in another setting.

The picture was taken in Horace Mann. There are many digital bulletin boards at TC, which post various upcoming activities. As you can see from the picture, those activities not only provide TC students the opportunities to gain academic resources and learn new skills but also encourage us to do sports and meet new people. I feel that those digital bulletin boards might include hidden curriculum, conveying the expectations that TC has for its students, that is, living a balanced and healthy life and learning from social life.

This is the picture of my Program Planning given by my advisor. It is a very formal curriculum. The courses that I took last semester and I am going to take this semester can be seen clearly. According to the category, I have four required courses for 12 credits and at least two courses for 6 credits outside the program. For other credits, I am quite free to make my own choices. There is an apparent emphasis on some required courses (such as Multicultural Approaches) which I have no freedom to choose. I think this is quite important in the U.S context. However, as an international student, I think some required courses are not perfect for students in other cultural contexts. Overall , I love most the design of the program which enables students to choose freely according to their own interests and academic abilities.

I chose this picture because, in my opinion, these boards allow students themselves to be part of the TC curriculum. The announcement boards that are spread around Teachers College are free to receive any type of opportunities, offers and information. It can inform about actual classes from the TC curriculum, thus from the formal curriculum. The way it allows every member of TC to post about relevant information shows both, the hidden and null curricula. Once these boards are intentional, it is clear that any posts from diverse socio-cultural background are accepted as a form of knowledge and community engagement. In that matter, the hidden curriculum is shown in the acceptance of sharing diverse material; brought from students, faculty and staff. At the same time, as an open board that permits anyone to post, the null curriculum appears in the freedom of information that are on these boards. It can go both sides, good and bad, once no one has actual control of what is posted and the interpretations each individual will make out of the information. So, at the same time that is shows freedom of speech and acknowledgement of culturally diverse topics, it also opens up for misinterpretation according to each person’s own bias.

This is a photo from one of the union boards in the basement of Zankel. The fact that the union board and union office is in the basement, an area seldom seen by TC students, makes me consider on the role space and positionality plays in our curricula. While union workers are all over campus day and night, they're not given the same status as the professors/faculty with offices in areas of TC with more foot-traffic. Considering Teachers College is a self-professed progressive school of education, I can see many faculty and students agreeing with the MLK quote on the poster. So then, who is this poster's intended audience? How does the placement of this union poster in the basement reflect TC's hierarchy of "workers"?
