It also did not help that the United States had a lot of controversy over the unresolved issue of slavery and new states would upset the balance of free and slave states. He threatened to veto the Compromise of 1850 because he thought it favored the slave states, and suddenly died the same year. These acts included the Fugitive Slave Act requiring northerners to return runaway slaves, California being issued as a free state, and the abolishment of slave trade in Washington D.C.(U.S.' largest slave trade center). This compromise was opposed by the current president Zachary Taylor, but after his sudden death, Vice President Fillmore took his place in full support of Clay's proposal. The Compromise was put into place but overall left the issue of slavery unsettled.

Northerners were angered at the Compromise of 1850 because of the Fugitive Slave Act. They did not like being required to take on responsibility for Southern slaves. However this only enraged Northerners with the possibility of previously free states being turned to slave states. Brooks heard Sumner's anti-slavery speech two days before heavily criticizing slave-holders, including one of Brooks' relatives. This angered Brooks and led him to almost kill Sumner.

Because Brooks and Sumner were in opposing parties, the event angered both sides. The Court also ruled that congress did not have the power to ban slavery in the states.

Seeing this as an attempt to stop the debate over slavery, Northerners were outraged. Because the Court said congress had no power to ban slavery, it also deemed the Missouri Compromise as unconstitutional which had previously placed restrictions on slavery in certain states. The creation of the Lecompton Constitution alone angered the Northerners since they wanted Kansas to be a free state and the constitution would prevent that. And current President Buchanan supporting it also angered Northerners because they felt that he was supporting slavery. This raid was an attempt to spark a slave revolt in the south and finally eradicate slavery. Although it was unsuccessful and Brown and his men were all killed or captured, it was a turning point in history.

This raid made Southerners realize what extremes Northerners would go to to abolish slavery. The raid also encouraged other abolitionists to take more aggressive stands against slavery. After Republican Abraham Lincoln came into presidency South Carolina was the first state to secede from the union inspiring many others to follow because of his controversial views on slavery.
