Material culture is when objects help to differentiate a group of people. In the image above you can see my friends and I posing in front of a theater sign for a show we had just attended. All of us holding posters. We had gotten these posters whilst leaving the venue. They were passing them out for free, so we all got one. This relates to material culture because most if not all of the people who attended the show got one. Not only did you have to attend the show to get one, but you had to go to this specific show to get this, exact poster. The poster only had our tour date, the people we saw, and location on it. However, those who didn't attend the show didn't get one. This poster separates us from the others and makes us into a group of people who all share this item.

Sex/Gender system is a complex, related web of cultural ideas on the basis of sex. While this sign is for a gender inclusive bathroom, I felt it was a good image to take. It shows both the sign for men and women on one. I took a photo of this because I noticed that the "women" figure is wearing a dress. I felt this showed the Sex/Gender system since bathrooms are separated by sex, however this very gendered concept of a dress, is the only characteristic that separates the women's restrooms from the men's normally. Women wear dresses while men are just, well, people.

Socialization is the way we learn how to fit in within our society and what is expected of us. In the photo above you can see a line formed at an amusement event in my local area. This behavior was enforced into us ever since we were young. Ever since kindergarten, if we wanted to get into the class room, go to the library, or go to the lunch room, we had to stand in a line. In fact, if you don't stand in the line or try to just cut in towards the front it is considered rude. This is just one of our many taught behaviors we have in society.

Gender stratification is when the sexes are ranked in a matter of which that women are less than men. In this image you can see a small, young girl in a blue dress, and the left side of a much bigger man. This is from the movie "The Other Lamb." In this film, the "Shepard" leads his "flock" to enlightenment. The Shepard is the only man in the flock and he is the only leader of the flock. In this image alone it perfectly shows the power disparity between the two. With the man being closer to the camera, it make him appear a lot bigger and stronger than the small, curled up girl on the ground. By making him bigger here, it contributes to the gender stratification idea that women are below men.

Deviance is any kind of difference from what is considered to be a societies norms. In the image above, you can see about five young people sitting on the road, blocking traffic. You can also see a police officer who has just moved one of the protestors before I screenshotted this. After doing a little research, I found out these people are environmental activists in France and are blocking the road in protest to get people to recognize and do more about climate change. I believe this relates to deviance because people don't usually sit in roads so them doing so is very much a deviance to everyday behavior.

This practice is called henna and is usually used to celebrate large, important occasions such as weddings. This is an example of non-material culture since its practiced by certain ethnic groups for special celebrations.

Deeper Connections:
1. Who or what is it for? Why was it created?
Henna was originally used for its natural cooling properties for those who lived in deserts. It is now used to help cool down, or calm the nerves of brides on their wedding days. Also used for its herbal medical qualities. Used to treat skin conditions such as ringworm or athletes foot. Many use it to dye their finger nails.
2.Who made/created this?
Since the practice comes from so long ago, its hard to say who created henna. People in Africa, Egypt, India, and the Middle east have all been using henna for the past 5,000 years.

In the image above, one sees a ton of little camps around something in the middle of the circle they've created. This event, which happens every summer, is known as Burning Man. Thousands of people all go out to the Black Rock desert and set up camp for a over a week. This event is a good instance of subcultures. These people are going out into the desert to spend time with themselves and to try and get more into their creative side. While this goes with the flow of everyday culture, not everyone wants to go on an 8-9 day wilderness adventure.

Deeper Connections:
1.How does the meaning of this change depending on who is using or observing it?
This event means a lot to those who attend it. Many people find the whole experience to be very spiritual or life changing. However, those who haven't gone and have no interest to, think its just a bunch of naked hippies partying in the desert. This proves my point further that this is an example of a subculture.

2.Who made/created this?

Larry Harvey and Jerry James started Burning Man. It started off as annual bonfire parties on Baker Beach in San Francisco.

In this video we hear this character from the show "Schitt's Creek talk about how he's interested in the "wine not the label." This relates directly to our conversations on gender and how its all a social construct. He talks about liking the wine not the label, since that's all gender is. Its a label. Sure gender is based off the two sexes, but that doesn't mean they're the same. What this character is describing is known as pansexuality, which is an attraction to all gender identities. This situation was a very smart and witty way to have this conversation that could normally be challenging to have.

Deeper Connections:
1. Who benefits from this?
I feel that both parties in this clip benefited from this explanation. The women got a better understanding of what she was confused about, and the guy got an easier, less direct, way of describing his sexuality.

2. Who made/created this?
Schitt's Creek, where the clip was taken from, was created by Dan Levy.

In recent months, the supreme court has taken a look at Roe v. Wade and had decided to overturn it. This case had protected women's rights to healthcare and abortions for over 50 years. This means that now in many states, that women don't have the access to abortions or preventative care either. I feel that this is an example of gender stratification. Not only do women have to fight for their rights, but they have to fight to keep them. White men have never fought for their basic rights, they were always provided to them. This makes women appear less than or unequal to them since they have to fight for it.

Deeper Connections:

1.How does the meaning of this change depending on who is using or observing it?
For some the Roe v. Wade being overturned is the everything they could've hoped for. Some believe that abortion is murder and have been fighting for this to be overturned for a long time. Others believe that its a women's choice what they do with their bodies and they see this as a major set back.

2.Who doesn't benefit from this?
I believe that women don't benefit from this.

Chicago Avenue and 38th Street in Minneapolis MN was the site where the poor life of George Floyd was taken by a police officer and where a memorial still stands for him today. I believe this relates to institutionalized racism since George's life was taken by a police officer who ignored his cries and pleads for him to get off of George's neck. Institutionalized racism is racism that has been so deeply engraved into a society that it can be found within laws or legal systems.

Deeper Connections:
1.Who or what is it for? Why was it created?
It was made to remember not just George Floyd, but all the other lives lost to cops who get too trigger happy or the lives of people who get pulled over, just for the color of their skin. This memorial symbolizes so much more than just the one life.

2. What is missing from this that is important to note?
George Floyd's death was just one of many poor unfortunate lives to be lost to the corrupt police system in our country. I would like to bring up the names of just a few others: Breonna Taylor, Stephon Clark, Michael Brown, and many, many more.
