There are two different types of prenatal screening: Screening tests and Diagnostic tests. The first tells you of a child's genetic abnormalities that are possible to occur, while the second can tell a mother with certainty of a problem. In different procedures can tell a mother about different possible genetic problems, for example the Nuchal Translucency (NT) screening is an ultra sound done to check on the embryonic fluid of a mothers placenta, and if there is sign of too much fluid then further diagnostic tests are done such as CVS or amniocentesis to see for sure if a baby has down syndrome or other genetic abnormalities. The diagnostic tests can be done at different stages of pregnancy and involve more than just an ultrasound, they can involve taking sample fluid of a mothers placenta( Amniocentesis tests) and or taking samples of a placentas tissue( CVS testing).

Link Was not uploading: http://www.stanfordchildrens.org/en/service/perinatal-diagnostic-center/prenatal-testing
