In many ways, it reminds me of House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros, in terms of both the writing style and content. The book centers around the protagonist's (August) growing up in Brooklyn. It gives readers a sense of both the joy of becoming a woman in this vibrant city but also the darkness that underlies a complicated childhood and adolescence.

My students participate in a reading trivia night called Reading Olympics (I am our school's leader) and this is one of the 45 books on the list this year. 
It was a compelling read about several students who were infected by a microscopic organism that was being developed for a new fuel source but then mutated and caused severe rashes and led to a widespread outbreak. It was a page-turning mystery that could lead to excellent conversations about bio-tech inventions and the environment!

The world needs more people like  Mr Delpopolo, Ms Williams, Connie, Cyrus, and Mona; people who care for the broken, fragile, and scarred children this world "chews up or squashed them into the ground." A society needs to be judged by how it treats its most vulnerable citizens, like kids in "the system".

It is a brilliant, and sometimes funny, look at managing life while dealing with OCD. I can't recommend it enough, because it teaches the reader about accepting that seemingly simple parts of life, such as going through a door, can be very difficult for some people, and that is ok. It also shows different ways OCD can effect different people. Fantastic!
