This summer I read the book “ The Summer I Turned Pretty ” by the author- Jenny Han. The book was about two family’s who go to a summer house in cousins beach and one family has a girl named Isabell also known as Belly and a boy named Steven and the other family has two boys one named Conrad and the other named Jeremiah both teens, the main character, Belly (isabell) has loved one of the boys (Conrad) from the other family since she was little and this summer she felt she could really have a chance, but both the brothers have always had some feelings for belly, watching the tv show adaptation of the book really changed my perspective on a lot of things, it helped me better understand the plot of the book and the directors casted the characters just as I would have imagined them. I highly recommend reading the book “The Summer I Turned Pretty” along with watching the 7 episode series. I am now reading the second book of the 3 book collection and can’t wait for them to film the second season to go with the second book. If I had to describe the difference between the book and tv show, I would say the book goes much more into detail and takes everything slower. I really enjoyed this book.

I read The Summer I Turned Pretty written by Jenny Han. The young adult novel is about the main character Isabel (Belly), and how she comes to a place called Cousins every summer. She spends it with her mom and brother, Steven, and her mom’s best friend, Susannah, and her kids, Conrad and Jeremiah. Every year Belly is pushed away from the three boys because she is they youngest and only girl, but this summer she has grown and is joining them. The first book focuses on flashbacks and how she was treated and the show mainly focuses on the present. Both however illustrate how she grew up and her passions during the summer. In the book and show we find out that Belly has had a crush on Conrad for a long time and go through the story finding out what will happen and how it effects everyone. I really enjoyed the book series and the show and cannot wait to see how they create a new season to match the second book.

This summer I read and watched The Fault in Our Stars. The story is about a teenage girl named Hazel who was diagnosed with cancer and her mother puts her in a teen group therapy with other people with cancer. She meets a boy named Augustus Waters who takes an immediate liking to her. They form a friendship and soon realize that they like each other. Hazel and I connect in many ways such as the feeling of not being able to open up to people about emotions and when you find someone that you can trust it is important. This story impacted me because I realized that I shouldn’t take life for granted and to do the things in life that I want so I have no regrets when I die. This book is a must read and I enjoyed it very much.

The book I chose was Pack Up the Moon by Kristian Higgins. This book is about a young widower, Joshua Park, who recently lost his wife (Lauren Park) to Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). In the book, we are given both points of view of the character before Lauren’s death and after Lauren’s death and how Joshua heals himself after her death. Lauren and Joshua, have a love so pure that when you read the book you wish Lauren won’t die hoping there is a magical cure because it is a book and anything can happen in them but it didn’t. But before her death, Lauren has a plan to help Joshua after her death where she left him letters on the first day of the month in the year of her death. Through these letters, Joshua can grieve the death of his wife slowly. Joshua learns essential life lessons from each task Lauren gave him to help him move on and continue his life. This book was an emotional rollercoaster that will keep you intrigued from the very first page. We get immersed in Higgins's writing where the character feels real to the point you feel the emotion that Joshua and Lauren are feeling. The book ends on a happy note and it was most definitely needed in my opinion it shows Joshua has moved on with his life but a part of him will never forget Lauren.

This summer I read the novel Maybe in Another Life by Taylor Jenkins Reid. The main character in this novel is named Hannah Martin. Hannah is a realistically flawed character that makes a variety of mistakes but tries her best to accept them, move on, and become better.
In the beginning of the novel, Hannah moves from New York back to her hometown of Los Angeles. After breaking up with her boyfriend in New York, whom she found out had a wife and children, she starts to feel like nothing in her life makes much sense anymore. Hannah is afraid that she will never do anything of value in her life. After Hannah lands in Los Angeles, she ends up staying with her lifelong best friend, Gabby, and her husband, Mark. Later, when Hannah, Gabby, and Mark go out clubbing, Hannah ends up running into her college sweetheart, Ethan. Ethan tries to convince Hannah to go home with him, but at this instance Hannah is conflicted. In this moment Hannah becomes very relatable. She doesn’t know if she wants to give into her desires or if she wants to try and rebuild her life without rehashing an old relationship that could very well become messy. Hannah wants the best of both worlds but knows that she has to make a decision. In this universe, Hannah chooses to go home with Ethan. She’s not sure if she’s made the right decision or not. Hannah ends up rebuilding her relationship with Ethan but things start to come to an end when she finds out she’s pregnant with her ex boyfriend’s baby. Hannah starts to break down and wonder what she’s going to do with her life and how she’s going to provide for a baby.
In a different universe, Hannah doesn’t chose Ethan, she chooses to go back with Gabby and Mark. Unfortunately this decision causes her to get run over by a car. She ends up being hospitalized for a while and temporarily loses her ability to walk. Hannah feels frustrated with her herself, like she made the wrong decision. She just wants to be happy but she feels like she keeps making problems for herself. She is still jobless with no real home and already she has put herself in a situation where she can’t even try to put her life back together. Hannah wants to just give up and grieve the fact that she might never find a true place where she belongs or a true place she can call home.
Later in the novel, Hannah stops feeling sorry for herself and tries her very best to get her life on track in both universes. In the universe with her pregnancy, she ends up taking a job from Gabby’s dad and buys a new car for herself. Although her and Ethan aren’t together at this moment, Hannah believes that if she’s not with Ethan, then that is what was meant to be. Maybe she is not meant to be with Ethan, maybe she is meant to raise this baby on her own. Her whole mindset has changed on life, she’s become more accepting and believes whatever happens to herself happens for a reason. In the universe where she is hit by a car, she ends up bonding with a nurse and forms a romantic connection with him. She also starts going to physical therapy to learn how to walk again. Hannah eventually ends up finding her way back to Ethan in her universe with her baby. Ethan ends up raising the baby with Hannah as his own. Hannah also ends up with the nurse in her car accident universe. They couldn’t be together at first because nurses aren’t allowed to be romantically or platonically involved with patients but they find their way to each other throwing aside all circumstances. In both universes Hannah gains independence and bravery. She becomes so different from the beginning of the novel. She gives more thought to her choices and doesn’t dwell on things for too long because she knows that if it’s meant to happen, it will happen. Although she ends up with different people in both universes, she knows she is happy in both. Hannah is confident in herself that she has made the right decisions to have led her to where she is now, in every universe.

This summer I read the book called "The Summer I Turned Pretty" by Jenny Han. This story is about two family's who go to a beach house over the summer in cousins beach. The main characters are Isabel also known as Belly, Conrad, Jeremiah and Steven. Belly has always been in love with Conrad and has always been best friends with Jeremiah, but this summer she is about to turn 16, and feels like she has a chance with either one of the boys. Throughout the book we see how Bellys summer plays out with Conrad.

Asleep - The Smith's
Charlie mentions how much he likes this song throughout the book. He first heard it from a mixtape his sister's boyfriend gave her, which she ended up giving to Charlie instead. Later in the story, Charlie makes a mixtape for his friend Patrick and includes this song. Again, when describing a photo of his friend Sam, he identifies this song to explain his feelings about her.

Blackbird - The Beatles
Charlie is introduced to this song by his friend Sam at Bob's party and he really likes it. Later in the story, he includes this song on a mixtape he makes for his friend Patrick.

Landslide - Fleetwood Mac
Charlie is introduced to this song by his friend Sam when she jumps into the back of a moving pickup truck and tells the driver (her brother Patrick) to turn this song on loud. They admire the city lights they see once they pass the tunnel and Charlie falls in love with Sam. Charlie also puts this meaningful song on the mixtape he makes for Patrick.

Smells Like Teen Spirit - Nirvana
Charlie knew how much his friends Sam and Patrick liked this song and it reminded him of them whenever it was on. He considered them his best friends.

Something - The Beatles
Charlie's Aunt Helen gave him this 45 record because she loved the song and was close with Charlie. It was one of the last gifts she gave Charlie before she died in a car accident. This song and the gift are sentimental to him. He gave it to Sam to demonstrate how much she meant to him and how much she had impacted his life just as his Aunt Helen did.

Somewhere I Belong - Linkin Park
Charlie blames himself for the death of his Aunt Helen because she always bought him two gifts for his birthday on Christmas Eve. The last time he saw her she told him she was buying a gift for his birthday and she died in a car crash during a snowstorm. He believed if she didn't buy the second gift she would be alive. This song's lyrics include "I want to heal, I want to feel" which is how Charlie felt when he found out his aunt died.

Adam's Song- Blink 182
Charlie lost his best friend Michael to suicide. This song is about a suicide letter found after a teen died and I thought it was appropriate to use for this song list. It also reminded me of the poem Michael gave to Charlie before he died.

Waiting on a Friend- The Rolling Stones
This song describes the relationship between Sam and Charlie.

This summer I read “The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants” by Ann Brashares. The movie helped me get a better understand of the book because it added more depth and development to the characters. In the book, Carmen happens to buy the pants while out shopping with Lena and Effie for Effie’s prom dress. She keeps the pants for some time before everyone happens to try them on at her house. In the movie, the four girls are at a thrift shop together when Carmen grabs them, and they all try them on there. This shows more of a friendship bond since they all found the “magical” pants together instead of one of them randomly buying the pants. The movie also shows a better connection between the characters Lena and Kotsos. In the book Lena avoids Kostos at the beginning, which leads to her to think he is creepily spying on her when he pops up where she is skinny-dipping alone. Later, when she happens upon him swimming naked, she decides that it was just an accident and, without having a single conversation about the mix-up or about anything at all, decides that she’s in love with him. Her grandparents, because all Lena’s says about the spying incident is that Kostos is not a nice boy, seem to think that she was sexually assaulted based on the way they go after Kostos and his family, and yet, terribly, don’t allow her to talk about it, even when she’s trying to clear up what happened. In the movie, Lena has a meet-cute with Kostos when she falls off the dock and gets the pants caught underwater and he saves her. Instead of being friends of the family, Kostos is actually from a family that has a long feud with Lena’s family and their relationship is “forbidden.” They talk to each other and there is never any miscommunication between them. Their romance be aimes much more enjoyable and also makes more sense. The movie takes the worst parts of the book and fixes them. The friendship of the girls is much more clear and strong

This summer I read the novel Purple hearts by Tess Wakefield. The novel is about a girl named Cassie that has type 1 diabetes and is struggling with money so she can’t afford her medication. There is then a guy named Luke who decides to be a marine in the army after going through a drug addiction. He also has to pay his dealer he had while going through that addiction. They then meet each other through a friend named Frankie who is also a marine like Luke. They don’t really like each other after meeting. Days after she finds out that if you get married to a marine you get health benefits. She first goes to Frankie but he denied her offer. Luke over heard and did not agree with it at all. Later that day he started thinking about what Cassie had said about getting benefits that involved money. That’s when he got on board with the idea and faked their marriage. They did everything a married couple would do once Luke had left for the marines. They were good until an accident with Luke happened and Cassie had to take responsibility for him. The dealer then wasn’t receiving his money he was supposed to be getting from Luke and then proceeded to tell the cops about the fake marriage they had just for the benefits. Luke got sent away to prison after taking responsibility for all of it. Later on they both realized they weren’t really faking anything because they truly did end up falling for each other in the long run. Cassie then waited for Luke until he got out of prison. Watching the movie on Netflix once it came out impacted my understanding of the book by showing me how it would have out if it was really happening to people. It showed the emotion in the actors instead of just reading words off a paper.

I read the book To Kill a Mockingbird over the summer. This is a 1961 novel by Harper Lee. Set in small-town Alabama, the novel is a bildungsroman, or coming-of-age story, and chronicles the childhood of Scout and Jem Finch as their father Atticus defends a Black man falsely accused of rape. Scout and Jem are mocked by classmates for this. This causes the town to see them differently because there father is defending a black man. This story is based on the 1960s racism and how it isn’t fair for everyone.

The book was about two best friends who bring their kids to their summer house in cousins beach. Laurel has a daughter named Belly and a son named Steven and Susannah has two boys Conrad and Jeremiah both teens. Belly has always had a crush on Conrad but everything changed that summer when both brothers started to have an interest in her. Watching the tv series compared to the book has changed my perspective because the plot was slightly different. In the tv series they added the plot line of Belly participating in a debutante ball, which wasn't in the books. There were also a few scenes that were different in the book compared to the tv series. This changed my perspective because I had different opinions on the characters after reading the book.

I red the novel called “ to kill a mockingbird” by Harper Lee. It takes place in the 60s and it’s a small city named “Maycomb” in Alabama. The entire moral and theme of the story is based off of the symbolism of the mocking bird. A mocking referrers to a person that is in no way bothering or harming you. Yet these mocking birds in our society are constantly “shot”(metaphorically). The mockingbird of this story is Tom Robinson, an average works man. In the story, Tom Robinson, a harmless man, is falsely accused of rape, simply because he is African American. He is sentenced guilty even though his layer’s argument possessed a lot more reasoning than the opposing side. Regardless he is sent away, later to be shot for “escaping”. Furthermore, Tom Robinson was “shot” for no apparent reason, just because the people were racist.
