English Romanticism was a literary movement that arose in the last decades of the 18th century and into the early 19th century. It was a reaction to the predominant literary mode of classicism, which was based on classical learning and clever wit. Romanticism prizes nature, emotion, and the individual. The movement emerged as a rejection of the values and practices of the Age of Enlightenment, with its focus on reason and rationality.
