Being a church, the interior exhibits a Gothic revival style. This style was popularised in the 19th century and reflects the architectural trends of Christianity during this time. Notable elements featured in the interior of St Stephan Cathedral that align with Gothic Revival are the pointed arches, ribbed vaults, stone columns, wooden beams, nave and chancel layout -which directs the light and attention toward the altar, and carved wooden pews.

Themes of Gothic Revival style are conveyed in the poster of Project 1 where the background features a similar colour scheme, of light beiges, hints of red, and gold accents, featured throughout the poster.

The church's exterior exhibits the same design style as the interior: Gothic Revival.

The exterior also exhibits buttresses, tall spirals and pinnacles, and stone facades, which are also key features of the gothic revival style.

The trees on the exterior of the church are also featured in the poster of Project 1, as depicted on the top left and bottom right corner.

The interior of Customs House exhibits a Victorian Classical Revival Style. This style is reflective of the 19th century in all public event spaces that were made at the time.

Features such as grand detailing, such as cornices and ceiling roses, high ceilings, marble and polished wood, browns, beiges and grand staircases are styled inside Customs House. These features were symbols of wealth and prestige in the 19th century, as they were a sign of wealth. They would have been chosen specifically to convey that the building, and more widely, Brisbane, was a place of new wealth and prestige.

Victorian classical Revival design, with its grand scale, formal elegance, and use of high-quality materials, gives Customs House a refined, timeless interior that complements its role as a historic and civic building.

Features of Customs House are exhibited in the Project 1 video, as the video starts by featuring someone opening a newspaper and reading about Brisbane, furthermore, the whole video is reminiscent of reading a newspaper.

Public buildings like Customs House, designed in the Victorian Classical Revival style, were symbols of governmental or civic authority. Newspapers function similarly, acting as authoritative voices in society. Just as these grand buildings symbolized stability and progress, newspapers conveyed the importance of information and the power of communication.

Customs House in Brisbane exhibits a Victorian Free Classical Style. It references Greek and Roman excellence through its columns and pilasters and uses this symbolic nature to evoke the same excellence in Brisbane. Customs House was the centre of trade in Brisbane in the 19th century, meaning that exterior visual impact was of high importance. Evoking Greek and Roman excellence was extremely important, as it displayed to outsiders the importance and elegance Brisbane held. Furthermore, the symmetry behind Customs House also has symbolic importance. It references the efficient and balanced nature of the trade Brisbane intended to do.

Other features of the Victorian Free classical style that is embodied in Customs house are the dome shape as the roof and drain structure, ornamental detailing such as ornate stonework and arched windows and doorways.

The interior of Louis Vuitton Brisbane is Neoclassical Revival, it was chosen to reflect the luxury and excellence of the products that Louis Vuitton produces. It is made of luxury materials such as marble, polished wood, and leather. Furthermore, a lot of the furniture and display cases are custom-designed to match the fit-out and interior layout of the store. The store exhibits a neutral colour palette to emote the existence of luxury and elegance. Lighting is used to elevate the products and draw the attention of people without overwhelming the space as too bright.

Louis Vuitton Brisbane City also displays local artists' art to increase context and culture. The installations are done by Indigenous artists. Louis Vuitton does this as an attempt to emphasise the artist to tourists and popularise them globally.

This style of Neoclassical revival also embodies the notion of minimalism. This style is used throughout the video in assignment 1, in that the newspaper effects and stylistic details are minimal and have a light and almost colourless colour pallette.

Louis Vuitton Brisbane City. It was established in 2005 and features sandstone, taking the rues from the classical architectural design first featured in the house's PLAS VINDOOUM in Paris. Louis Vuitton brought in Australian artist Otis Hope Carey to create a mural that spans the basement to the ground floor.  The mural attracts tourists as well as locals. The building – now heritage listed, was originally the Australia bank building.

Customs house duties were managing imported products to Queensland. This was important to Queensland as the manufacturing sector was slow to develop in the early stages, due to the struggle for ships to float down the Brisbane river. However, after much struggle, Brisbane was declared a port city in 1846 and the building was acquired by the federal government.

The success of customs house was not high in the initial opening, after the federal government took control, the building was used effectively.

Nowdays, all shipping is handled externally from the building, making the building a historical site, rather than functional.

St Stephans grass is usually shady and cold. Wind tunnels are formed regularly. the site embodies a classic architectural style and was designed by Benjamin Backhouse, who was an architect and politician in Australia. He was a Member of the New South Wales Legislative Council. The church was designed by famous designer Augustus Pugin, who was an English architect, designer, artist and critic with French and Swiss origins. He is principally remembered for his pioneering role in the Gothic Revival style of architecture. It was built in 1850 and quickly gained popularity, as Brisbane's catholic population was ever-increasing.

The outside grass area is a sacred area, where people leaving the church gather after a ceremony and discuss. The area attracts residents of Brisbane, as they attend the services regularly. Furthermore it attracts people from out of town when it hosts weddings or funerals.

Inspired by Time Square, an outdoor performance area, wherein local artists can show their musical talent and bring together the people of Brisbane.

Queen Street is usually bustling with busy people. It's not the destination of many, but rather the path to get there. I want it to turn into the destination where people deliberately have to stop and look. Furthermore, I want it to draw people's attention in the city.

From the image above, it can be seen that glass, fluid stretchy shapes, shiny, objects/ materials will be used in the final piece.

The original traditional owners of the land where Brisbane City and hence Queen Street now stand are the Turrbal and Yuggura Peoples who inhabited the land for 60,000 years. They referred to the land as Meanjin, meaning place shaped as a spike, which references the shape of the Brisbane River. They were fishing people, and the river supported this as well as other spiritual and recreational activities. The Turrbal and Yuggura people were the custodians to all parts of the nation, including the land, flora and fauna. Their survival was reliant on their experience and intimate knowledge of the country.

Queen street, the city’s main street, is filled with luxury shops and attracts tourists and locals for its many events held on the street and was one of Brisbane city’s first streets, as it opened just as the free settlement in 1842 was initiated. Surveyor Dixon had undertaken a survey of the streets of the town in early 1840, which essentially comprised a grid pattern of square blocks, with one of these streets being Queen Street. However, Govener Gipps criticised Dixon’s layout and commented that it was ‘simply and ordinary provincial Settlement’. This lead to Gipps widening half of the streets, and created a demand for essential shopping and market locations to be held on one street.

Furthermore, the site conditions were analysed for the second board.

-          Although there are awnings that provide shade, Brisbane is very humid, this area gets very hot.

-          The area also gets slippery due to the heavy rain poor during summer.

-          Queen street is located where it is because it is central to the city.

-          There are waratah trees lining the walking area.

-          Queen street, although very hot, does not get sunny due to its placement.

-          There is flash flooding, meaning most surfaces are made of water impermeable substances.

-          Wind tunnels form regularly during the spring season.

-          Queen street is also used as a circulation point. It shortens the travel time for foot traffic in Brisbane CBD.

After speaking to the priest of St Stephan’s Church, he explained the reasoning behind the symmetry of churches

Queen streets layout also allows for flexibility with the set up of music equipment. With speakers, amplifiers and monitors that can optimise noise quality. Furthermore, the semi-enclosed environment allows for many kinds of music to be adapted to the space. This further allows for audience engagement. The vibrant nature of Queen Street and the fact that it only allows for pedestrians (no vehicles), makes Queen Street have a lively atmosphere that is perfect for pop and rock concerts.

The audience can access the stage by looking up towards the concert area, this allows for excitement amongst the audience and optimal noise quality.

Queen Street’s urban design, combined with professional sound engineering, can create an excellent environment for concert sound quality. The reflective surfaces of tall buildings, semi-enclosed acoustics, and the lively atmosphere all contribute to a rich and immersive auditory experience, making it a great location for concerts. With proper planning, the area could easily transform into a dynamic concert venue, delivering high-quality sound for both performers and audiences.

This exercise was used as a method to get every idea I had on paper and compare them to see which was best. In the end, I used a mix of all drawings.

These drawings do not feature on the posters, however, they were entirely helpful in allowing me to understand my own idea, and how it would be executed best.

In order to cope with the extreme heat and sunlight, the insertion will also provide shade for the users, as it is set above ground. Furthermore, for those watching the performances, the roof will be made from a UV  coated glass, which ensures the sunlight is reduces when looking at it.

• To allow for continuous foot traffic, the insertion will be above ground, allowing for Queen Street to continue to provide a path from one end of the city to the other.

• When the insertion is being used to perform, it will cause a block in foot traffic. This is good as it allows the audience to stop and look at what is happening.

• Queen street lies in the Tropical Cyclone Risk Area, meaning the buildings and infrastructure is built accordingly.

RESPONSE TO THIS CONTEXT

To withstand the wind tunnels that are created in Queen Street during the Spring season, the insertion will be made out of concrete and glass, and will be secured between the 2 building either side. The glass will have holes in it to allow wind to pass through the structure, but also minimise the wind tunnel, and further allowing Queen Street to be more comfortable to walk and stand.

Finally, in the middle is a perspective sketch that shows what the area will look like.

It also creates a sense of uneasiness as it  draws audience away from shopping centre. Furthermore, the site utilises that space as a space rather than a place of transport. It emphasises Brisbane’s love for local artists by providing a platform to perform with. Almost like busking but more professional.  It also creates something to look at on the site. At the moment the site is boring and simply has old buildings that most people have seen before. This installation allows for a new spectacle to be added to queen street. Many people work in the city and consider queen street as a mundane part of their day where they walk past the designer shops and consider it nothing more than a convenient way to get from one end of the city to the other, However, with this installation, this changes the user experience to orient the working class to have a slight change in their routine. This will be used as a point of difference for them. Some may interpret the use as annoying, in the way, and too contemporary, alternatively, some will think that it is a fantastic use of the space to change the colourless street into a place to be.

The material of the insertion is mainly glass. The glass makes up the 2 walls and the floor. This allows the audience to embrace the music more, and also evokes a sense of uneasiness as the structure does not look stable. The pattern made by the two walls is inspired by tree roots. They twist and wind in a way that holds the tree up with no extra support. I wanted to replicate this in my site. This displays to the audience the fragility of art and evokes them to stay and watch.
