It is also known as HD and Huntington's chorea. Huntington's is a fatal genetic disease that causes the progressive breakdown of nerve cells in the brain. It weakens both a person's mental and physical health. It is an autosomal dominant neurodegenerative disorder. due to an abnormal expansion of IT-15 gene on chromosome 4 which encodes for the protein huntingtin. It was named after and discovered by George Huntington in 1872.

Huntington's disease affects both sexes and all races and ethnic groups around the world. People at risk have the decision of doing genetic testing to see if they have the disease. It's prohibited for those under the age of 18 to do it, but a neurological exam can be done to confirm of juvenile HD. Prenatal testing can be done. Pre-genetic diagnostic testing can be used with In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) to make sure that any fertilized egg implanted does not have the abnormal gene.

People with Huntington's disease start to notice and develop symptoms between their 30s-50s. However, this doesn't mean that it can't occur much earlier or later in life. Doctors call it juvenile Huntington's disease when the disease onset is shown before the age of 20. Earlier onset often results in a somewhat different presentation of symptoms and faster disease progression.
