My name is Lauren and I currently live in Olympia, WA. I'm a Sustainable Food Systems major with a focus on public health. I took Vietnamese because my boyfriend is a Vietnamese American and his parents are immigrants from Vietnam. They both have interesting stories to tell but their English is limited (but still very good!). I am learning Vietnamese because it makes them happy and I can hopefully use it in real life scenarios; Washington has a lot of Vietnamese people and restaurants! My experience in the program was great. Foreign language classes are usually not my forte, but I felt more at ease in this program. I tried to prepare myself for the weekly meetings, study the Quizlets, and note any mistakes I made throughout. Cô An was extremely helpful and made sure to reward those who put an effort in the class. Growing up I went to a temple for a decade and they didn't teach the classes well. Because of the inconsistency, my Vietnamese stayed the same until I went to Vietnamese 101 at ASU as a junior. My language skills jumped a lot from barely any to some. I took Vietnamese 102 in my last. semester and it made another jump in improvement. 

My experience of taking classes is good because the teacher is qualified to teach Vietnamese as a language. It helps a lot having a teacher that can teach the language. It also helps a lot to use the language in everyday life (I use hellotalk and Italki as a way to use the language). My advice is to take the class. It helped me a lot with my Vietnamese and I hope it. does to yours too!
