During the Cold War, containment was a foreign policy strategy adopted by the United States to limit the expansion of communism and the influence of the Soviet Union. It was based on the belief that the spread of communism posed a threat to democratic nations and the Western world as a whole. The term "containment" was coined by U.S. diplomat George F. Kennan in a 1947 article titled "The Sources of Soviet Conduct." Kennan argued that the Soviet Union's aggressive and expansionist tendencies needed to be contained through a combination of political, economic, and military means. Containment was used as an example during the Truman Doctrine.

Established on July 29, 1958, NASA emerged from the Cold War-era space race between the United States and the Soviet Union. In its early years, NASA focused on developing human spaceflight capabilities. The agency's first major milestone came in 1961 when astronaut Alan Shepard became the first American to travel to space. Just a few weeks later, President John F. Kennedy set an ambitious goal of landing a man on the Moon before the end of the 1960s. This declaration laid the groundwork for the Apollo program.

These shelters were intended to shield people from the devastating effects of nuclear explosions, such as the release of radioactive materials and the resulting fallout. During the height of the Cold War, the United States and the Soviet Union engaged in a tense arms race, with both nations possessing nuclear weapons capable of causing massive destruction. This climate of fear led to widespread concern among the public about the potential impact of a nuclear conflict.

The Cuban Missile Crisis, which occurred in October 1962, was a pivotal event during the Cold War that brought the United States and the Soviet Union to the brink of nuclear war. The crisis emerged when the U.S. discovered that the Soviet Union had secretly deployed nuclear missiles in Cuba, just 90 miles off the coast of Florida. The crisis unfolded in a tense context. The U.S. had previously attempted to overthrow the Cuban government led by Fidel Castro in the failed Bay of Pigs invasion in 1961. In response, the Soviet Union, led by Nikita Khrushchev, sought to strengthen its alliance with Cuba and counterbalance American influence in the region. As a result, Soviet nuclear missiles were installed in Cuba, posing a direct threat to the United States. This was the closest the war has ever been to WWIII or nuclear warfare.

It was built by the German Democratic Republic (East Germany) to prevent East Germans from fleeing to West Germany and to symbolize the ideological division between the communist Eastern Bloc and the democratic Western Bloc during the Cold War. The construction of the Berlin Wall began on August 13, 1961, catching many by surprise. The wall consisted of a series of concrete barriers, barbed wire fences, guard towers, and a "death strip" in between. Its purpose was to separate East Berlin from West Berlin and halt the mass migration of East Germans seeking better economic opportunities and political freedom in the West.

It prohibited the imposition of poll taxes as a prerequisite for voting in federal elections. The amendment aimed to eliminate a barrier to voting that disproportionately affected African Americans and other marginalized communities. Before the 24th Amendment, several states employed poll taxes, which required voters to pay a fee in order to participate in elections. These fees were used as a means to discourage and disenfranchise certain groups, particularly African Americans in the South. Poll taxes were seen as a discriminatory practice that violated the principles of equal representation and democratic participation.
