With Alex, I would use imaginative mindset by meeting with Alex to set up a goal. This goal would be something that pertains to what Alex should be learning but, Alex and I agree on the goal together. A goal will hopefully allow Alex to stay motivated and engaged. With the goal, I think attaching a coordinating prize for when he achieves his goal would be beneficial. In addition, I would implement multimodal activities so that Alex has a chance to engage in kinesthetic activities, group work, and traditional desk work. The change in activities could keep Alex more engaged.

With Alex, I would use the imaginative mindset to talk or discuss with Alex and find some common ground or compromise. I would ask for input on the issues he may be having and then determine any alternative route to adjust to the circumstances. This could include different activities or strategies to reach the learning targets. Together, Alex and I would determine this common ground or goal and state this together. Gradually, we then could work toward this goal. When the goal is reached, Alex then could be rewarded.

The first question I have about Alex would be: has he been tested to determine if he has any underlying issues (ADHD, ADD etc) that may be the root cause of his distractions in the classroom. I would then meet with him and his parents to devise goals and strategies that Alex agrees to and has input in determining. I would recommend more kinesthetic and multimodal activities to help keep Alex engaged in his work.

I would have a one-on-one conversation with Alex to find out what he thinks would help him focus better during our class time. Together, we would come up with a list of personal goals and expectations that he can work towards and stick to during class. Every day I would ask him how he's met his goals or if he thinks he needs to work on something as a sort of "check-in".

I would try and set up a goal with Alex. I would try and see what he is interested in and what he wants to learn about. Be able to use this knowledge to set up a goal for him to reach and to get him interested in reading what he wants to read. It will be educational as well and give him motivation to keep reading.

I would first have a conversation with Alex to figure out how to best help him. We would talk out with is working and what isn't and from there we would then try to make a goal to make small changes. Maybe each week set a small goal to help him improve and get back on track.

I would want to have open communication with Alex to see if there are any outside factors, that he's comfortable sharing with me, that are effecting his performance. I would also want to meet with other teachers on my team to see if he was having trouble in other classroom settings as well. Our students are complex people with complex lives and if I can do better as a teacher to understand those things I think I will better serve my students as a whole.

To help Alex using the imaginative mindset I would ask to talk to him during down time and start an open communication. I would ask Alex if he feels there is something not clicking and if there is something I can do to help. I would then ask if together we can set goals. Together we would work on some goals that are realistic and small so we can achieve them timely and be able to set another goal!

I would change my thinking from how can we fix Alex to how can we work with him. That means having a conversation with Alex, the co-teacher, maybe his parents about what Alex is wanting or needing and what we can do. This is an easy way to set boundaries for ourselves as teachers but also give Alex a chance to set boundaries. Maybe he just needs a small reminder without feeling embarrassed or maybe he has an underlying learning issue that is not known yet.
