This dispute is still occurring to this day. Today, United Nations troops control the border between the north and south sides of the island. This divider has been named the "Green Line." The island as a whole has developed its economy tremendously, as it is now a central financial hub in Europe, and centers around tourism and light manufacturing.

Turkey claimed that they had the right to invade the island because of The Treaty of Guarantee, that stated they could intervene if needed. This was condemned as invalid in 1983. The Annan Plan of 2004 suggested that the Greek Cypriot National Guard was so be dissolved and Turkey had rights to intervene and keep militia on the island.
