After reading the article I learned that gen X were more likely to have their house net worth decrease. In the article Richard Fry writes that "The median net worth of Gen X households had declined 38% from 2007 ($63,400) to 2010 ($39,200), while the typical wealth loss for Boomer and Silent households was not as steep (26% and 14%, respectively)". This is important because if the homeowner were to sell their home it wouldn't cost as much as when they bought it.

Technology has affected our lives in many ways and has improved over the years. In the last couple of years how we have shopped has racially changed. More people today choose to buy clothes online rather than going to the store adn website where even local sellers can post like craigslist or eBay we can find anything online. Also, how we communicate has changed. At a young age, children are already introduced to devices and have become dependent on them and in school all of the way that kid and teachers communicate is all through our devices instead of going up and answering questions.

In the article, it states that in late 2017 Jimmy Mejia, Patty Garrido, and many other tenants were getting evicted due to the apartment complex sold. This isn’t the first time gentrification has occurred in LA according to the 2017 Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority report state that “More than 8,000 people became homeless for the first time last year”. This is crucial because it shows just how bad gentrification is and how low-income families are affected by it.

In the US, two-thirds of renters claim that they cannot afford to buy a house and paying for the down payment is getting really difficult. Research shows that Americans spend more than half of their paycheck on rent. Even though the housing market has been recovered from the 2008-09 financial crisis, housing prices today are not very affordable. The housing market today is on the verge of entering a recession by 2020, says Zillow. Most survey respondents have said that the Federal Reserves actions on interest rates will be the reason for the recession to rise in the U.S. If interest rates increase, taking out a mortgage will be more costly which means that this will make it harder for someone to get a home.

She has won a school board election in Broward County and pushed for law, called Alyssas's law (Alyssa was her daughters name) that would require silent panic alarms, that would immediately notify the police, to be installed in every public school. Her and other parents also are trying to make it a requirement for teachers to go through E.M.T. training and to have a tourniquet kit. They also want public schools to have more guidance counselor, metal detectors, and better protocol for mental illnesses. Something interesting is this mom sends her sons everyday to school with bullet proof backpacks and the House of representatives are contemplating on creating a red flag law making it illegal for anyone found guilty of a hate crime to have access to guns.

This article argues that doctors are not the ones we should be holding accountable for the rise in medical bill prices. The insurance companies should be held responsible.
Currently, there are several legislative movements that threaten to compromise the availability of critical care to any patient.
Under federal law, emergency doctors are required to treat every patient in need regardless of their ability to pay. However, the cost of providing this care for patients who don't have insurance is much higher than what the doctors will receive for treating this patient. This may be incentive to attempt to deny / turn away for the purpose of financial gain for doctors. This highlights the need for fair rates from payers and insurance companies to lower their prices so more people can afford it and do not have to pay their medical bills out of pocket.

Youth In the Justice System

Summary: Since 1899, the way that youths have been treated in courts have changed immensely. Youths now are privy to rights that adults are privy to. However, in the late 1980s to the 1990s, prosecutors and judges chose a “tough on crime” attitude, leaving youths with unnecessarily harsh sentences, often without any form of rehabilitation. Today’s courts uses rehabilitation as the main goal, so incarcerated youth have access to education programming, and recent psychology on developmental programming has led juvenile justice to view youths through a different lens.
Key Interesting Change: While most juvenile court cases are not public or easily accessible, the records are becoming more and more available, not being immediately sealed or expunged when the juvenile reaches adulthood, leading to barriers for these youths when searching for employment opportunities.

This article starts off with video created by the Sandy Hook group. The video begins just like any other back to school video. The kids start off talking about the supplies they got but slowly the video becomes for chaotic and kids are running in the background and gun shots are being fired. The kids start talking about how they can use their supplies to break a window to escape or use a sock to keep a wound from bleeding out. The video was created to help spread awareness. In the article it explains the video and also mentions statistics on shootings since the Sandy Hook shooting. For example last year, 2018, there was a total of 97 school shooting incidents which is the most on record during a year. It also mentions how Texas has started to ban AR 15's and the federal government passed a law to strengthen background checks on the retailers and who is buying them.

Vallie Brown, a 13 year old, is currently living in a large van with her mother since they cannot afford to live in a house. There are 1,794 people in San Francisco living in their vehicles which shows a 40% increase since 2017. It costs around $3,700 a month for a one bedroom apartment in San Francisco which has been a factor that has made homelessness rise up even more. Authority has tried to help out some people with what they can but others decide to give complaints and tickets. San Francisco and Oakland have provided a safe spot where RVs and people living in vehicles can park in.

This news source is from the UK.

The issue of health care is presented differently when the topic of health care is discussed in a non-US source. In several Mexican articles, there seems to be a large focus on providing health care for all. They already have systems in place that are meant to provide health care for all, with a mix of "public health insurance programs, employer-provided health insurance and private out-of-pocket care. And a number of disconnected social security institutes that provide care". Costs are lower in Mexico and are accessible to the majority. US articles often focus on why the prices are so high in the US, but rarely offer solutions to fix it. In addition, there is a strong "every man for themselves" theme in more conservative health care articles, in comparison to other countries focus on providing affordable health care for all.

California lawmakers ban facial-recognition software from police body cams

1. The bill, AB 1215, marks the latest legislative effort to limit adoption of facial-recognition technology. The bill prohibits the use of biometric surveillance technology, which includes facial-recognition software, in police body cameras. It also prohibits police from taking body-camera footage and running it through facial-recognition software at a later time. It does not prevent state and local police from using facial-recognition technology in other ways, such as in stationary cameras, and it does not apply to federal agencies such as the FBI.

2. I think that these legislative action are good and they are helping protect our 9th amendment. I would like to this to be taken to a federal level because it would prevent the police from roaming the streets and scanning every person they see. Also, it would prevent people from being scanned without their consent. Also, they bill will only last for three year, so if something arises in the future the bill can be re-written or changed.

This act provides offices that regulate homeland security, Department of Justice, and Federal Bureau of Investigation. These offices would regulate these departments to make sure that there is nothing happening that would allow for terrorists/terrorism in the US.
2) I believe the legislative actions are helpful, because this Act is ensuring regulation of terrorism. The Domestic Terrorism Prevention Act of 2019 makes sure that there are domestic terrorism offices in the Homeland Security, Department of Justice, and Federal Bureau of investigation. I would like to see the Legislative branch propose more bill ideas regarding regulation of terrorism and acts that can help strengthen the Domestic Terrorism Prevention Act. By strengthening this Act, the US can have more security and hopefully reduce the terrorism rates.

A study done at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine estimates that about a quarter of US health care spending is going to waste. This roughly translates to $760 billion to $935 billion going to waste annually.

The main causes of this include "comes from unnecessary hospital visits, fraud, hospital-related complications, poor outpatient treatment, brand-name medications, and overly aggressive care", and so on. Additionally, the highest amount of waste came from administrative costs. The article states that ironically, these costs may be resulting from insurance companies’ attempts to cut down on waste.

While the companies intentions may be good, there needs to be a change in their plan of action as it is wasting excessive amounts of money. Dr. William Shrank speculates that " if we take a more active role to eliminate waste, address affordability, and improve care, we don’t need to fundamentally disrupt the health care system".

I believe that these legislative actions have the potential to work if the insurance companies successfully cut down on waste. This funding then can be used to decrease prices for minorities and further fix the system.

Congress is about to listen to the testimony of Frankie Meyers, Yurok Tribal Council vice-chairman, as well as other pioneering doctors about nature-based solutions for climate change, including how forests, grasslands, and wetlands can increase carbon storage potential. The most recent legislation introduced was by two senators from Florida and South Carolina, who have introduced a bill which would help protect local fisheries against the effects of climate change. I'm glad that both of these things are occurring as they demonstrate that congress is at least listening to voices of reason in the climate community, despite current legislation being relatively small scale and focused on the effects (fishing problems) rather than causes (increased carbon emissions).

https://www.floridatoday.com/story/news/newswire/2019/10/16/legislation-moves-protect-fisheries-climate-change/3995212002/

I think these actions need to be updated considering all the talk about cloning and shaming but it doesn't seem as if anything is going to happen legally with animal cloning. Most of the acts and hearings that occurred were due to the thoughts of human consumption of the cloned animals as well as weather the produce from them is safe or not. Considering the article mentioning that two thirds of Americans who are against cloning would be unknowingly buying food and produce and products used by cloned animals. There were multiple events within the legislative across the states such as Iowa, Washington, Massachusetts and Kentucky.

The United States has increasingly been pushing out "technological blockades" to various major Chinese tech corporations by banning the "sale of US technology" to these companies; this is the Legislative Action which is currently taking place, the United States creating federal legislature to ban the sales of US technology to foreign countries.
2.) These Legislative Actions are somewhat neutral, posing a potential threat to perhaps both the US and China. I'd like to see more American action regarding the US-China technology war; as in the United States pushing out more of these types of legislative action.

On Oct.11 Trump reached a deal with China that would delay and stall tariffs on $250 billion worth of Chinese goods. This was the 13th round of negotiations. The actions currently taking place in the Executive Branch are the Governor of California is signing and enforcing laws to strengthen the previous gun laws.
2. I think these actions actions are good because, it has been crucial for all gun laws to be strengthened and reenforced and for new ones to be made. This is a step in the right direction. Some actions I would like see the Executive Branch take at the Federal level would be to follow in Californias footsteps and strengthen their laws so every state has strengthened gun laws and for every state and the federal government to strongly enforce gun laws.
3. The actions of the Executive compare to the actions of the Legislature because the Legislature make the laws, meanwhile the Executive branch enforces them and chooses who enforces them and how to.

The Executive Branch is currently challenging California’s authority to set tailpipe emissions under the Clean Air Act.
2. I have conflicting views on this topic, as vehicle standards are usually set by the states, but environmental and emission standards are usually set by the government. Both sides have credibility in their claims. I would like to see the Executive Branch pass a law allowing states minor control over emissions standards, so California could make the move that it wants to, but not have total control.
3. The actions of the Executive Branch are more confrontational/effective than the Legislative, as they are directly blocking California's request instead of negotiating it, like we often see in the Legislative Branch, and as with the majority of the issues last week.

1. The president has provided increased grants of money (1. billions) for states to help prevent the opioid crisis. Furthermore Trump initiated a movement against drug use within the country. There was a push for federal law enforcement against opioids.
2. I think that these executive actions are helping. They are all good things, which allow for the betterment of civilian health. I would like to see more healthcare oriented actions made.
3. Both actions made by the executive and legislate branch intend to prevent the worsening of the opioid crisis. Both aim to provide either citizen welfare or money for programs.

"In particular, China would lift the current ban on US poultry imports and recognise the American public health certification system for meat product imports"
2. These actions benefit American farmers and consumers of poultry. The Executive Branch should continue to make compromises with CHN in order to get closer to a finalized trade deal that will benefit both economies while still retaining certain restrictions that do not jeopardize the US goal of bringing more manufacturing to domestic territory in order to decrease dependence on foreign imports.
3. These actions are a continuation of the previous legislative actions observed last week. The Executive branch seems to have played a larger role in the Trade War than the Legislative Branch thus far.

1. President Trump, forefront of the Executive Branch, has been spending over 1.4 million dollars on ads on Facebook to promote his re-election campaign.
2. I'd consider Trump's actions to be relatively both good and bad in certain aspects. They are good in the sense that he is trying to promote his re-election, but rather bad considering how much money he is spending to achieve this; he has spent over a million dollars to roll out re-election ads to every state.
3. I feel like there is a similar amount of activity when comparing Executive actions to Legislative actions in regards to technology; both branches seem to be involved quite heavily in "technology."

What do you think about these Executive actions? Are they good/bad? What types of actions would you like to see the Executive branch take at the state or Federal level?
I think the executive actions are bad because there hasn't been any solid evidence on the biases by the companies and seems to only reflect the personal interests of the president, instead of a need from the public or a general problem than affects most citizens.
3. How do the actions of the Executive compare to the actions of the Legislature you looked at last week?
The executive actions seem to apply less to the general public and have to go through less barriers/steps in the process to get passed.

Well it seems that there are actions like reports being done about the knowledge of human and animal cloning. With not being here yesterday and without power I was able to pull a 272 page article created by the executive branch. In the summary it talks about reseach dating back to 1997 and goes through the different ideals throughout the panel. Another thing the article goes over are the pros and the cons of not only animal cloning but human cloning as well. Currently there doesnt seem to be action but more reports building to some sort of action. Since the article is fairly recent. So far with the steps it seems to be making twords actually having actions, it is a good thing because it shows improvement twords addressing the positive and mainly negatives of this topic. The article that I found is comparable to be much more helpful in the factors of being informative of actions that are being planned out but is dated back to 2002 which is earlier than the articles that I was able to discover last week which were dated from 2006 to 2008. Hopefully overall there is a more updated report on this subject but it also overall just comes to show that this topic has been going on for years and only now has been openly popularized.

2. I disagree with the decision to withdraw from the Paris Climate Agreement as it is one more step away from reduced emissions and a cleaner globe. Climate change is particularly important right now, as hotter summers have led to drier vegetation which ignites more easily, leading to increased frequency and severity of wildfires in California. Thus, it is important that the executive branch start to change their stance on climate change in order to protect out citizens.
3. The executive actions are very anti-climate change, whereas in the Legislative branch, there is a sentiment for emission restrictions in the house but nothing is being done due to the republican majority in the senate.

This article is about one of the first supreme court cases on gun control in 10 years: New York State Rifle and Pistol Association v. City of New York. This case is about a New York law on gun control laws that allows people to obtain a handgun license but they are only allowed to have it in their possession at their home and in certain circumstances like going to the shooting range. In the special circumstances they are specific rules they have to follow when transporting the gun. No matter what they are not allowed to transport outside of New York City and that is what this case is about. They are scheduled to hear the oral arguments on December 2nd. This case is important because it may set the standards for how future 2nd amendment cases will be decided, especially because recently the 2nd amendment has had lots of restrictions put on it in the past from other states.
1. currently in relation to my topic the judicial branch is trying to figure out how to approach cases regarding the 2nd amendment. Due to the controversy with trying to not restrict the right too much the judicial branch is in the middle of a case that may set the standards for how future cases regarding the 2nd amendment will be approached and decided.
2. i think this case is very crucial because there hasn't been much done about the 2nd amendment or many laws to control gun violence and this might be the start of it. The judicial branch is helping make and impact on gun control.
3. the actions of the legislature compares to judicial because the legislature is starting to make laws but they haven't made any quite yet meanwhile the judicial branch is in the middle of a court case in the supreme court that 3will make a difference. Same thing with the executive branch they don't have many laws to enforce.

The Supreme Court’s Groundbreaking Privacy Victory for the Digital Age

1. The Supreme Court ruled in favor that the government cannot take our phones tracking data without a warrant. They court said that the government must get a warrant to get the data, even if they ask the company for it. Even though the company may store it, we are still entitled to the privacy of it not be disclosed without our consent.
2. I think these are actions are really good, and I think they are using this to affect other areas. They are hopping the supreme court on privacy will pave the way for other cases and bring the privacy laws up-to the modern society.
3. The actions are similar to what is happening the in the legislative branch but no in the executive branch. The legislative branch is fighting back against companies selling our data without our permission for profit, but the executive branch is sinking more money into developing and using surveillance technology.

1. What are the actions currently taking place in the Judicial Branch in relation to your topic?
The supreme court will hear a copyright case in which Oracle is suing Google for using Java's programing language without paying for it. Both the federal appeals court and the second appellate ruling was in Oracle's favor.
2. What do you think about these actions?
I think they are justified, the only reason it got so big was because the stakes were 9 billion dollars and both sides are huge tech companies.
3. How do the actions of the Executive and Legislative branch compare to what is happening in the Judicial branch?
The actions here are less political in nature, and more in the form of settling disputes where a lot of money is at risk. For this case in particular, it doesn't seem like the Judges' decision will change much in terms of the interpretation of the constitution.

This article explores the topic of the law in relation to a health care professional's religion and argues that "federal laws should protect religious conscience rights of heath care workers".

1) In November, a federal judge in New York denied new federal regulation protecting the rights of doctors, nurses and other health care workers to decline to participate in medical procedures that violate their "conscientious objections" (such as abortions due to religious reasons). The rule was intended to ensure that medical professionals would not have sacrifice their jobs in order to follow their religious beliefs.

2) The rule was struck down on purely technical grounds. However, some groups celebrated such as Planned Parenthood. Some argue that if this rule passed, it could harm women, LGBTQ members and other minorities. In the past, there have been several laws passed to accommodate " the rights and needs of individuals with conflicting interests". However, in certain situations — such as regarding women’s reproductive rights (abortion and birth control) and euthanasia (assisted suicide) — it may be difficult to seek a balanced approach.

3) This was a court case, so the legislative branch and executive branch have little power over this situation.

There is growing uncertainty in China concerning their trade policies, evident as "Trade War" increases in search volume.
- Expected to keep dragging on throughout next decade... Executive branch is likely going to push for US "victory" in trade conflict while Trump remains in office. Judicial branch will likely only step in to monitor the extent of the power of tariffs the President can control before there is interference from Congress.

I don't think that these actions are good or bad. The Judicial Branch is simply checking on these companies to make sure they are not breaking antitrust laws.
