Public Speaking (Simone)

Definition/ Characteristics- Addressing a large audience, typically by making a speech.

Strengths: Get information out to a large audience.

Weaknesses: It can be difficult to capture the attention of a large group, and some people have a fear of public speaking.

Tools/ Platforms- There are many different platforms for public speaking like at work meetings, class presentations, stand-up comedy, and TED talks. Tools for public speaking could be a stage and a smart board. I would argue that technology can also be a form of public speaking, for example when an influencer goes live on social media.

Effectiveness/ context- Public speaking is the most effective in environments where people are ready to listen and what you are speaking about is relevant, some examples are a speech about the bride at a wedding, a presentation about trees at a climate convention, and a teacher presenting a lesson plan at school.

Cultural/ ethical Considerations- If you are presenting to a large audience, there may be people who don't speak your language as a first language, especially if you are traveling to a different country. Some ways to overcome this issue is having visuals on a screen behind you, making sure to slow down your speech, using proper annunciation, and providing a flyer with key points in the audience's primary language.

Audience/ usage- Public speaking is typically used by people in leadership positions, such as teachers, experts, CEOs, and politicians. These people all use public speaking to share information or directions.

Technology/ Trends- Technology relates to public speaking in many ways. During COVID lockdown, bosses and teachers would present on Zoom to audiences, and influencers on apps like Instagram and TikTok can speak live to millions of people. Additionally, speakers who present to large live audiences are often recorded so their speeches end up reaching many more people after it happens, for example TED Talks, presidential speeches on the news, and videos of speakers from live events.

https://courses.lumenlearning.com/wm-publicspeaking/chapter/cultural-difference-and-multicultural-audiences/

Good cross-cultural communication creates a space where everyone feels appreciated and encouraged to share, leading to teamwork and respect for one another.

Strengths: The strengths of communication between different cultures include the ability to come up with new and creative ideas by combining various cultural viewpoints. It improves relationships by building trust and understanding, which can lead to better teamwork and solving problems together.

Weaknesses: Some problems in communication can come from language differences, not understanding other cultures and different ways people talk. Also, believing that your own culture is better than others and having biased views can make it harder to communicate well.

Common Tools and Platforms: Common tools that help people from different cultures communicate include platforms like Microsoft Teams, Slack, and Zoom, which allow real-time chatting and video calls no matter where people are. Translation apps like Google Translate help with language differences, and cultural knowledge tools give tips about many cultural customs.

Effectiveness in Different Contexts: Talking and understanding different cultures is very important in international business, working in mixed teams, and during activity talks. This kind of communication helps people share their different viewpoints, which is key for making decisions together. It works best in places that encourage teamwork and need different cultural ideas to solve global problems. In these cases, good cross-cultural communication helps build relationships and brings people together to work towards common goals, even if they come from different backgrounds.

Cultural and Ethical Considerations: Cultural differences play a big role in how people communicate with each other. These differences can affect how we act, how we talk, and what we believe is right or wrong. When people don’t understand or respect these differences, it can lead to misunderstandings, arguments, or problems in relationships. There are also tough questions to deal with, like how to appreciate another culture without taking it from them, and how to communicate in a way that is fair to everyone while still being true to ourselves.

Audience and Usage: Cross-cultural communication is used by many groups, including companies, governmental organizations, and NGOs. They interact with different cultures for reasons like discussions, team management, or international relations. People who want to improve their personal or work relationships across cultures can also gain from learning these communication skills. It helps them share ideas and experiences, leading to better understanding and teamwork.

Technological Influence and Trends: Technology greatly affects how we communicate with people from different cultures. New tools help us talk to each other instantly, no matter where we are. Some trends include using AI tools for translating languages and virtual programs that help people learn about each other's cultures. These tools make communication easier and encourage everyone to feel included.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cross-cultural_communication

https://executive.berkeley.edu/thought-leadership/blog/cross-cultural-communication

https://digicrusader.com/ten-strategies-effective-cross-cultural-communication/#:~:text=9.%20Patience%20and%20Flexibility

https://theglobalmagazine.org/cross-cultural-communication#:~:text=What%20Is%20The%20Importance%20Of%20Cross%20Cultural%20Communication
