This includes lifting, lowering, pushing, pulling, or moving objects such as sculptures, canvases, heavy materials, or equipment in studios or exhibition spaces. It is regular practice for students to often handle awkward or heavy objects, which increases your exposure to these risks. Understanding the risks and how to minimise them is critical.

UAL has procedures in place to help you achieve the higher risk manual handling – for difficult moves, you can contact the campus facility or us to provide moving equipment and assist you. There are also specific manual handling risk assessments. These assessments consider the weight, posture, environment, and individual capacity, such as people with disabilities or pregnant. Factors like stress or high workloads can also contribute to poor manual handling practices, resulting in rushing or poor communication.

Gov Guide for Risk Assessments

This covers information on organisations big or small keeping staff safe through risk acknowledgement and assessment.
