There are 3 main risk management strategies I feel are important in this area:

Provide annual dyslexia awareness training for all teachers.

This is extremely important because as a teacher I was blinded to all of the issues within dyslexia. My students were at a disservice with me because I did not do enough. With proper training, I feel as though I would have been more understanding and passionate about students with dyslexia.

Ensure early universal screening by grade 1.

I feel as though Leonard ISD does a great job at this as it is a law. I think it is a great risk management strategy and start to identifying those with dyslexia.

https://tea.texas.gov/academics/early-childhood-education/early-learning-assessments/early-childhood-data-collection-requirements#first-second

Maintain clear documentation of interventions and progress monitoring.

This is extremely important as well because the more documentation we have/provide the more we know on the student and the more accurate we can be when providing the student with the correct path. At Leonard ISD we use MTSS which helps us see those who need support and keep an eye on them.

As a future school counselor, I am ethically responsible to advocate for students with dyslexia for Free and Appropriate Education (ASCA Ethical Standards, A.3.b). My ultimate goal is to make sure that my students with dyslexia/ potential students with dyslexia, receive the support they need, evidence based interventions, and the environment that helps them grow in self-confidence and academic growth.

The first legal and ethical standard I identified to was the conducting early screenings and provide tiered interventions. For me, this is huge in my current education journey. As a dyslexia specialist, it is extremely important that we screen as early as possible.

The next legal and ethical standard I identified to was implementing multisensory structured literacy approaches. I love this and think students learn in a variety of ways. To best help a student succeed we must teach them in many ways.

The last legal and ethical standard I identified to was ensuring that all staff is trained to recognize early warning signs of dyslexia. I honestly feel like staff could do more training on this. So many lack the knowledge to understand what our students are needing, including myself before becoming a dyslexia specialist.
