This form of racism is the type that involves the racist person assuming that one race has the same mindset because of one or more persons of the race doing something they didn't like.

Identity is not a physical, it's a mental thing or even a spiritual thing. In the book, the characters are proud to be who they are. They like being the minority. They don't like to associate themselves with the racist white people. Your identity also gives you personality like many of the characters in the book. Walter wants money for a liquor business so he works hard. Mama loves family so she cares for the family. Identity in all is who you think you are and who you want to be.

They are a black family living in the late 50's in Chicago. It shows that they are definitely not a perfect family.

The theme of assimilation is being played here because they are a black family living in a time where white people were mostly in control of everything. White people wanted to control black people and wanted them to lose their own culture and assimilate. The Younger family is a unique family because they refuse to assimilate into the culture of the white people. A character in specific is Beneatha who is friends with Asagai and he is a proud African. He often gives her tips on how to be more proud of their heritage. In the play Assimilation is treated as something to be ashamed of and a sign of weakness.

This is a story about a dream deferred and showing the good things in other people lives takes away the message of the story.

The way America works is that if you succeed you will be fine but if you don't succeed then you will be eaten up in the system. The family really wants to live in a nice house and have good jobs which is the big idea of the American dream. Another conflict or issue that is still relevant are the areas in cities where the economic welfare is divided. This is segregation.

Identity isn't something that you can just explain in a few sentences, because it can form and change over an entire lifetime. Identity isn't only how other other people view you, but also how you view yourself. Identity is the way that you portray yourself to the World, and how the World views you in return. People that you know or a culture or religion that you are a part of can have a big effect on your identity, like Walter Lee became known for being sour and going out to drink all the time, but being loving occasionally. However, just like Walter Lee became extremely happy when Mama gave him the money, your identity can change over time, and people can view you in different ways.

I think that all of the scenes take place in the family's house because it has begun to become a part of them. The house is where they can all come together for things like meals, and so naturally it also becomes a place where discussions and arguments take place. Another reason could be that a main point in the plot is when Mama buys a house, so the whole play takes place in their current home so that you can picture them, after the play ends, taking all of their experiences from their old home and putting them into their new one.

The theme of assimilation is treated in this play by being one of the main themes. With situations like with Lindner (118), the white communities want to keep themselves separate, but the Youngers want to move in anyway and not be seen as separate. This can also connect to the theme of identity because the Youngers are learning and expressing how to be proud of who they are, and to not be shut down or ignored by other people just because of the color of their skin. They are pushing to not be seen as different because of the color of their skin, but to be proud of their heritage and be seen as equals because everyone is a human.

There might not be the same exact issues as there were in that time, but issues similar to that and issues that revolve around racism are definitely still around today, and it is clear to see. I think that one of the reasons that it is relevant to learn about these issues and that the issues are relevant is so that we can learn from our mistakes and make sure that those issues don't come back up today. They exist, and we can use past experiences to make sure that the issues don't come back and that racism stops.

One example of when they experienced racism was when Mr. Lidner came to them and told them that they can't move into their new neighborhood because they are black. (116-119). At this time people still treated African Americans as "lesser" people, even though the times would soon change. We see an example of this in A Raisin in the Sun when Mama dreams of having her own garden. (53). Though she tries to keep the dream alive and never gives up by taking care of a small plant, she grows sad that she doesn't have a house with a garden in the backyard to grow this in, like she always thought she would. While racism was a big occurence for a very long time in our country, we have spotted the injustice right away and the Black Lives Matter movement had begun. While racism was the norm in the past, we see that Beneatha acts a voice as do so many people today, and I think the author wanted us to understand how to be a voice so that we could act today.

For instance, though this may not seem like assimilation at first, the way that the Youngers live and the way that they face racism daily is an example of assimilation because they just accept the fact that Black people are treated differently, and they just live with it like it's justified.
