Ivan Yakovlevich
One morning Ivan cuts a loaf of bread in half for breakfast and finds a nose hidden inside! He had no idea how this could have happened, but funnily enough he recognized the nose as belonging to Kovalev, a man whom he shaved twice a week.

"Whether I came home drunk yesterday or not, I can't say for sure. But by all tokens this incident should be unfeasible; for bread is a baking matter, and a nose is something else entirely. I can't figure it out!. . ."

      Platon Kovalev
Kovalev awakes to find that his nose has disappeared! He initially thought he might be asleep but when he realized that he was awake, he immediately dressed and went straight to the chief of police.

"Kovalev stretched and asked for the little mirror that stood on the table. He wished to look at a pimple that had popped out on his nose the previous evening; but to his great amazement, he saw that instead of a nose he had a perfectly smooth place!"

         The Doctor
The doctor is called by Kovalev once he has possession of the nose and comes immediately to assess the situation. The doctor decides that the best option is to leave the face as is and forgo reattaching the nose. He mysteriously states to Kovalev that it would be worse for him to attach the nose.

"Of course, I could attach your nose; but I assure you on my honor, if you do not believe my word, that it will me much worse. You'd better leave it to the effect of nature herself."
