Teachers ask probing questions to dig deeper and clarify understanding.

Questioning reaches knowledge and reasoning targets. Students must use the conceptual knowledge and reasoning to respond to the teachers questions.

Questioning is used to scaffold students into the right direction without explicitly giving answers. It is also used to pinpoint where students are in their level of understanding to further inform instruction (formative assessment).

Example: CGI Lessons
CGI Lessons are cognitively guided instructions, in the math setting; that are guided specifically through questions. Teachers ask probing question to students and allow them to construct meaning on their own. This leads to a deeper conceptual understanding versus the traditional teacher dominated lesson. The CGI lesson includes two problems: the first is discussed with the whole class and the second is taken as an assessment.

The assessment of knowledge is determining whether or not students have a general understanding of concepts. It is the facts, the vocabulary, and the context of the subject being taught. Questions should strategically assess the students ability to recall the facts and more general ideas of the topic.

Reasoning is the application of knowledge. It is how the student uses the knowledge to make connections. Questions that assess the student's ability to reason should require the students to think through the situation or problem solve.

Skill is the actual process of using the knowledge and reasoning to help you perform a task. It is knowing how to do the task at hand. These questions should address the students understanding of the procedures. The question should require the application of knowledge and reasoning to work through the problems.

Product targets are tangible pieces that make the knowledge evident. For instance producing a written paper, performing a choreographed danced, or giving a speech. None of these tasks can be complete without the knowledge , reasoning , and skill.
