Since the murder of George Floyd in the USA, and the subsequent ripple effect across the world, I’m sure many of us have felt a whirlwind of emotions. Me and my colleagues in the midwifery department want to be very clear that we have a zero-tolerance policy for any form of racism and discrimination.

We understand that these events are unfortunately not new, and racism exists and persists in our societies. This is in addition to the health inequalities, as outlined in the MBRRACE-UK report and Public Health England’s Covid-19 review. It is important as midwives and future midwives to educate ourselves and each other. With the intention and action of education, we will be able to challenge bias, acknowledge lived experiences of racism, improve the care of women and families, and most importantly LISTEN.

We have created a safe environment in the form of a “padlet” for you all to be able to express your feelings, access information and feel supported. We hope this space will provide an opportunity for education, introspection and healing. Please keep in mind that any comments you post will be in the capacity as KCL students and professionals. The padlet will be monitored so any unprofessional or insensitive comments will be removed.

The Sims instrument (pictured) is a double-bladed surgical instrument used for examining the 🤬 and cervix.
"Sims" is from James Marion Sims "The Father of Gynecology" who invented it.
Why re-name it? From Dr Phillips, "Lucy is the name of one of the 3 slaves that Dr. Marion Sims operated on without consent or anesthesia in the development of his surgical instrument. The others were named Anarcha and Betsey. According to his own records, he operated on the 18 year old after she was noted to leak urine after having a baby. Records note he operated on her in front of other doctors for hours without anesthesia. She became so sick that it took her months to recover.
When I learned of the story(at some point in medical school) I promised myself that I would not use his name to request the instrument. As a woman of color, I would not allow him to hold space in my operating room, especially for an instrument created off the backs of women who look like me. His heinous treatment of them will not be forgotten.
