I will get an internship with an immigration lawyer. I am going to, in small steps, make a change in this country. A change for the better, a change that society is begging for. Although I can not make this change alone, I will contribute to this movement. Immigration interests me because I am an immigrant.

I have felt what it’s like to be brought to this country as a toddler. To be an innocent without blame who is still considered a criminal simply for being in a place where I'm not accepted. I have felt what it’s like to lose my mom because the law decided to take her away from me. I want to free any other kid from having to go through what I went through. Immigrants, mothers, and children will highly benefit from this. I want to stop children from being taken away because, yet again, none of this is their fault.

It will be a learning experience for my future career in law and hopefully, as an immigration lawyer. Colleges will see how passionate I am for things I care about. They will see how I’m willing to put my time into my education. I have learned a lot about the laws and process of law firms. I met a few lawyers and I can clearly see that it’s the environment I wish to be in. I want to learn more about the paperwork and the strategies to represent someone in court. I will measure my success by writing a paper about all that I learned. I will know whether law/immigration is a career I want to pursue or not.

2/13/20
I emailed my anatomy teacher from last year who said he had some contacts who were immigration lawyers and he got me in touch with Arturo Vasquez. I contacted Mr. Vasquez and told him about the senior summit project and what I was planning to do. I informed him about my aspirations to be like him and learn the process of what it takes to be a lawyer.

2/15/20
The immigration lawyer answered and we agreed on the internship. He asked for it to be at a later date so that everything could be prepared and he also has a very busy schedule right now so everything would workout later. We agreed on March 15. I am supposed to go in to meet him and settle everything for a weeklong internship.

3/20/20
Due to the unexpected COVID-19 spread, the world has come to a halt and so have my internship plans. I have looked for alternative ways of getting the information I need. I have a family friend in Georgia called Michael Urbina from Urbina Law Firm and he agreed to do a phone interview with me. I planned ahead many questions concerning his life as a lawyer. I’ve always had these questions since I know I want to be a lawyer one day. Since it is an interview over the phone, I can’t post a video or anything, I but I recorded it and made on overview of the questions and his answers.

3/26/20
Even after the over the phone interview, I still don’t feel like I got the experience I wanted from this. I obviously can’t replace the internship experience. What I mainly planned on getting from the experience was a connection with Mr. Vasquez’s clients. This could help me form a similar relationship to that of an immigration lawyer and their client. I know lawyers have a huge impact on their clients life which is why they can for such a good relationship. I wanted a similar experience or at least to learn some of the stories. Since I could not do this, I have chosen to watch a documentary on Netflix called Living Undocumented. This documentary focuses on the life of several immigrant households. Not just hispanic immigrants, but immigrants from all over. This broadened my understanding since I mainly hear news about hispanics and not middle eastern immigrants living in the country undocumented. The documentary shows the struggles they face in their day to day life. A few of the families have a deportation order and it tells the story of how it all happened. One of them, which really surprised me, is a middle eastern family. What really stood out to me was that the dad was an entrepreneur and a business owner. Since he did not have the papers necessary to make actions for his business, he had to get an American to make all the executive decisions and to put everything under his name. This was so that he didn’t get caught and possibly deported back to his country. What made this so shocking to me was how even after all his barriers and struggles, he’s still a successful businessman because he has persevered and found his way around it.
