Learning to play the Guitar Week 1 🎸

1. Your name, matric number, date
Name: Emil Kong Dern Yao
Matric Number: A180960
Date: 25 July 2023

2. What have you done?
I have officially signed up to be a musical student at 'The Guitar Store Cheras' on the 11 July 2023. I decided to start my elective posting earlier (rather than the assigned date) since it would mean learning more, so the accounts that I will include here in this Padlet for Week 1 would therefore be an accumulative of the things that I have learnt for the past few weeks.

During my first few weeks, I got exposed to the basics of playing the acoustic guitar. There were 2 ways of playing it: which is scale and chords method. The main difference between the two is that playing using the scale method allows you to have the lead or the melody of the song played, whereas the chord method allows you to play the rhythm of the song either through strumming or fingerstyle. Fingerstyle is typically the harder one, which is what I'm aiming to learn most, and the reason to which drove me to sign up for guitar lessons 🎸.

So I started off with learning to play the scale (single notes) - the 'GA BCD EFG' notes on the first 3 strings (treble strings). When I got more familiarized with this, my instructor taught me how to play simple songs with these singles notes which included:
- Ode To Joy by Beethoven
- Jingle Bells
- Happy Birthday
- We Wish You A Merry Christmas

And apart from that he taught me some strumming methods too which I find pretty cool. He basically taught me the 2 ways of playing the guitar, and we will work from there during our lessons.

3. Points to remember for Week 1
- Always have in mind the reason why I started learning the Guitar in the first place because giving up or making excuse can arise if I'm not sure of what I'm doing
- Remember the theory of learning the Guitar
- To practise the scale and chord method during my free time

4. Your feelings and thoughts
I felt extremely excited for the first few weeks of learning the guitar, because I know that now I'm going to have formal training for this, whereas previously I only learned to play the Guitar through the Internet, which is something that I'm not against, but I believe a professional training me in person would benefit me the most, and have greater impact in the long run.

After every lesson I would be more encouraged too, because the lessons showed me:
- what I thought I know, but I in fact don't know
- what I didn't know and it's something I'm not aware of
Hence, I truly appreciated all the lessons I had with my instructor.

There was definitely doubt in me where I question whether learning guitar at this age, 22 is worth it or not, but like I've mentioned above, I feel like it's definitely worth it. Not just the emotional satisfaction that it gives, but also am intellectual challenge where I get to apply the knowledge that I've learnt and put them together to play any songs in the future.

5. Any difficulties/concerns? How did you cope with it
I guess it's always difficult when one is just beginning to learn any musical instrument, and the Guitar is no different. There's this barrier that you have to overcome as a beginner, getting used to how one presses one the strings, how one strums the strings, how quick can one change from strings to strings. As a beginner there's no other method to improve other that keep working on it until it feels natural, like second nature, and that's what I did, though I still struggle sometimes to make it feel natural.

6. 2 words to describe elective posting so far
"Worth it"

7. Your plan for next week (Week 2)
I plan to utilise my free time to work hard on practising the Guitar, just practising what was taught in all the lessons till date until I get natural with the basics.

What have you done?
I have applied for a piano course at Primo Music Studio and I already have 2 classes this week.

In the first class, it is just some basic note recognition and the basics of playing the piano. Maybe I'm a fast learner, the teacher decided to let me play some simple songs in the second class.

As I mentioned, in the second class, the teacher ask me to recognise the notes in the above songs. It is a classical song called "The Wild Horseman" by R. Schumann. It was quite hard actually, but the teacher asked me to just recognise the notes on the right hand first. Luckily, I managed to recognise them and can start to play them on the piano!!!

3. Points to remember from week 1!

Practice makes perfect !!

Remember my basics.

4. Your feelings and thoughts
I felt excited for the first 2 classes as learning the piano has always been my dream since childhood. However, I have a little bit of frustration as learning something new could be challenging and for me, it's to remember what are the notes on the music sheet.

5. Any difficulties/concerns? How did you cope?
As I mentioned in number 4, the difficulty that I faced is to learn to read musical notation and translate it into piano playing. I guess keep on practising is the only way to cope with it.

6. 2 words to describe elective posting progress so far.

Fun

Challenging

7. What have you done?

I've started my elective posting, and I've decided to work at a restaurant to gain experience along with improving my social skills.

I began my elective posting earlier than the official date to ensure that I could adjust to the unfamiliar environment. It's also to ensure that I can do my best in terms of time management, as the food and beverage business has a hectic schedule and tasks. Each worker has various tasks, yet we work as a team and must keep up with everyone's pace in order to provide good service to the consumer. The restaurant, like others, also received orders via online platforms. For instance, shopee, grabfood, and foodpanda.

During the first week, I was briefed on how to operate it prior to the opening period. I must ensure that tables are properly placed and assist co-workers in the kitchen as needed. The restaurant has recently begun using a QR approach for guests to order their own meals, so I was also briefed on how to use it and explain to customers if they needed assistance. For the first week, I was assigned to the counter to become acquainted with the system. At the same time, I was asked to learn and participate in food preparation because they are short-staffed and require assistance. It was a lot for me, especially at lunchtime. I was overwhelmed because the place was packed. Customers were coming in and orders were coming in from an online platform at the same time.

3. They even explained to the customers when I was a little delayed in working with the system.

5. Any difficulties/concerns? How did you cope?

I was having troubles when I needed to handle multiple tasks at once, such as processing orders from multiple tables while also attending to a queue of customers waiting to pay at the counter. I then decided to evaluate what needed to be done first with what could wait.

6. 2 words to describe elective posting progress so far

Exciting

Challenging

7. Your plan for next week (Week 2)

I aimed to manage myself better and to be brave enough to ask for help from coworkers because I am new in this field and require assistance. I also planned to give myself some time to adjust to this new setting and practice time management with multiple chores coming at the same time.

What have you done?

I started my elective posting one week earlier just because I want to be fully prepared at my workplace. I work at the stall at a recreation park. It was my first time working. So it is a new challenge for me. For your information, this place is more crowded during public holidays and weekends compared to weekdays. The reason is most people are working, so during weekends or public holidays they like to spend their free time with children and family in these beautiful places.

The first thing I do is make myself comfortable in this new workplace. After helping arrange the product such as snacks, I arranged the drinks inside the fridge. I checked the ice-cream in the freezer and there were many choices. I watched the operator of the wonderful waffle. The smell is good. For the first week, I only help wrap the waffle and give it to the customer.

I noticed the adult preferred waffle with peanut butter filling, where the kids love the waffle with the strawberry filling.

3. It’s totally different compared to when you are in hospital looking after a patient. I think I have a lot of new skills. I really admired the operator who did the same work everyday.

5. Any difficulties/concerns? How did you cope?

First of all I need to arrange the snacks, drinks and other items early in the morning. I usually feel worried if I can't finish the work before the customer arrives. I must remember the product if the customer asks the question. I think this matter can be solved by doing it everyday.

6. 2 words to describe elective posting progress so far

-Exciting

-Challenging

7.
Learning the Ukulele Week 1: The Basics

1. Your name, matric number, date
Ahmad Saqif bin Nazib
A180985
30th July 2023

2. What have you done?
I have signed up for ukulele classes in category of interests. The academy is called Wonderful Music Academy and is located in Kangar, Perlis. I was assigned with an instructor named Mr. Jason. He was very experience in teaching students from young to old. His knowledge in musical instruments is very vast and his teaching style is very nice. My classes were held from 3pm to 4.30pm. In that period of time, I will learn somethin new on day one and practice for the rest of the week. During the first session, I was taught about notes and chords as well as the tuning for the ukulele. After getting used to holding and strumming the ukulele, I learned my first song which is twinkle twinkle little star. In that musical score, there were both fingerstyle, which consisted of notes only, and chords which consisted of multiple notes, strumming at the same time. It was tricky at first, but I am getting used to it by now. My fingers are hurt from practicing, but I believe the pain will go away in a week or two. As for tuning, Mr. Jason taught me using an app in a phone. Basically, the ukulele uses the CGEA tuning. Mr. Jason was very strict about rhythm as well hence, I had to repeat a lot of the strumming because I went off rhythm. Ended this week with a rough play of the twinkle twinkle little star song.

3. Points to remember from week 1!
a) A decent song consists of melody (the notes), rhythm and symphony between both, there when practicing, learn the notes, play according to rhythm and implement both of them at the right tempo
b) Tune the ukulele everyday to make sure the strings are taut especially for new ukulele. It tends to go out of tune very easily
c) Strum hard and clear and hold the ukulele properly in order to be comfortable
d) Practice makes perfect!

4. Your feelings & thoughts
At first I thought this was going to be easy to medium. Turns out, even with less strings, an instrument still needs practice. Who knew? Overtime, I felt a sense of determination and felt humble because I usually play piano and now I'm clueless in playing a new instrument.

5. Any difficulties/concerns? How did you cope?
Since I've already had a music background, reading the notes and musical scores weren't tough. But strumming the ukulele was pretty tough. This week, the more i practice, the more painful my fingers get. Left side fingers felt sore from pressing on the strings. Right side had abrasions from strumming. Though I do believe with patient, these inconvenience will soon begone. I'm concerned about my fingers, but as all of us do, they will adapt itself. I started to slowly strum the correct way to avoid any abrasions from the nylon string.

6. 2 words to describe elective posting progress so far
- Painful
- Interesting

7. Your plan for next week (Week 2)
For next week, I plan to incorporate chords while singing. And play the full song of twinkle twinkle little star properly. Mr. Jason mentioned that I will learn a new song if I improve.

1. Your name, matric number, Date
Hazim Bin Fadzli A184033
30 July 2023

2. What have you done?
The first week of class, I was introduced to fundamentals of golf swing and parts of golf clubs. There are 4 parts of golf clubs; grip, shaft, clubhead and blade. Golf swing mechanics consist of Takeaway, Backswing, Transition, Downswing,
Impact and Follow Through. The main focus of the first week was to work on the grip, takeaway and backswing. Before learning to swing, every beginner should learn the proper grip. The most crucial part of the swing that all golfers tend to overlook at is the grip as it sets the foundation for a perfect swing. It ensures control by keeping the clubhead square at impact. I started off the lesson with an iron 7 which is the easiest for beginner. The coach taught me the correct upper
body movement for the takeaway and backswing. It involves clockwise rotational movement of shoulder and arms. Body and arms should ideally complete the backswing at the same time to produce coiling effect.

3. Points to remember from week 1!
- keeping square face at impact helps the ball to go straighter and farther
- excessive grip pressure produces less speed and distance

4. Your feelings & thoughts
Golfing is definitely one of the things that I have always wanted to do. I felt excited to be able to take classes with certified coach. Every class when I am surrounded by professional golfers at the range, it is quite an intimidating
experience though the impact of hitting the golf ball soothe the nerves

5. Any difficulties/concerns? How did you cope?
Back pain was the major concern when I started off the lesson. Thankfully, it lasted for 1 hour. The coach guided me with swing drills to strengthen back muscles.

6. 2 words to describe elective posting progress so far
Exciting and therapeutic

7. I’ve decided to work at a restaurant to help me improving my social skills and be more attach to the society. The restaurant is located at a housing area near UTM thus, most of the customers are university students and workers. Same like other restaurant it is usually packed during the weekend and during breakfast as it’s a go to restaurant for Malaysian.

When I first get to the restaurant I was brief by the owner and the supervisor about the restaurant and how it is run. I was given the time table on when I’m supposed to work and we had an ice breaking session with all the workers there.

I started my first week with working as a waiter. Basically, all the workers are given a specific task but since I’m new, I was given the task as a waiter. It was pretty much an easy task I just go up to customers and ask for the orders and bring them their food.

I do try some other work like making drinks, but since I’m new I do take longer time to make drinks so during peak hours I’ll solely focus on being a waiter and when the customer is less I’ll try to learn how to make drinks.

3. Points to remember from week 1!

Communication is a key to win the customers heart. It is important to approach customers with a nice gesture and a wide smile so that they feel more comfortable to talk to us.

4. Your feelings & thoughts

It was somehow kind of an eye opening for me because I never work anywhere before. It’s definitely different approaching a customer and approaching a patient in hospital, surprisingly I’m more relax and confident about approaching a customer compared to approaching patients at hospital.

5. Any difficulties/concerns? How did you cope?

The major difficulty that I face is how to handle the customers when their food take longer to be ready during peak hours. My supervisor do thought me a few ways on making the customer wait patiently although they have to wait for quite some time. First we need to serve their drink as fast as possible as drinks are easy to be made compared to food and we also need to make ourselves look busy and make less eye contact with the customer that already order the food. This will make them think that we have a lot of customers and most of them will understand the situation and wait patiently.

6. 2 words to describe elective posting progress so far

Exciting and helpful.

7. Your plan for next week (Week 2)

For week 2 I plan to be more involved in preparing the food and drinks instead of just becoming the waiter.

1. Your name, matric number, date

Name: How Khoon Leong
Matric number: A180994
Date: 28th July 2023

2. What have you done?
Learning how to play guitar was by all means not easy at all. The first thing I had to learn was how to read sheet music, and with that, learn music theory. At first, I could not understand how to read sheet music, as it was my first time playing an instrument. It took me countless times to memorize each note for each string and for each fret. Plus, I also had to know how to associate each note on paper for each note on my guitar. As well, I had to learn how to keep in tempo to the beat of each song I was learning at the time, my teacher often was disappointed in me, because I would not keep tempo which made the song sound completely wrong. This made me practice even more vigorously to correct my mistakes.

3. Points to remember from week 1!

progress takes time and be patience

consistency is key

4. Your feelings and thoughts
Picking up a guitar and diving into the never ending journey of of learning is not an easy task, Mastering even basic chords and songs on the guitar give me a strong sense of accomplishment. This feeling of achievement greatly boost myself-esteem and motivate me to continue learning and improving.

Learning any new skill comes with its challenges. I experience frustration when my fingers don't cooperate, or when a particular technique feels difficult to grasp. However, overcoming these obstacles can lead to a greater sense of satisfaction.

5. Any difficulties/concerns? How did you cope?
When I start playing the guitar, pressing down on the strings can cause discomfort and even pain in my fingertips. This is a natural part of the learning process as I slowly building the calluses. To cope, I usually take breaks when needed, gradually increase my playing time day be day , and ensure my guitar is properly set up for comfortable play.

6. 2 words to describe elective posting progress so far

Excited

tough

7. Your plan for next week (week 2)
For next week, I will work on my strumming technique. Practice different strumming patterns (downstrokes, upstrokes, combinations) with a metronome to improve your rhythm.

What have you done ?

For the first week of elective posting, I started my business by creating a new Instagram account to promote my small business. I followed some of my close friends and relatives and I posted some posters that I have made by using Canva.

Since this is my first time venturing into business, I took some time to calculate the cost and profit that i would gain so that I can put a reasonable price for my goods.

3. Points to remember from Week 1

- Spending some time to design posters for your business is not a waste of time

- Always keep your business account active

4. Your feelings and thoughts

Honestly, I have mixed feelings to start off this business because yes I feel very excited to have my own small business since I love cooking and baking so much but at the same time I'm afraid that I could not handle it properly and all those 'what if' questions keep popping up in my mind. However, I'm gonna take this as a challenge and I'm gonna give my best for my small business to grow.

5. Any difficulties/concerns ? How did you cope ?

Actually, I’m not a creative person so I find it very difficult to design poster. So, it took me quite some time to come out with an interesting poster because I had to spend time to google and get some idea.

6. 2 words to describe elective posting progress so far

Exciting and challenging

7.
