So when the Portuguese denied him to explore for them, he set out from Spain with 5 ships to discover a western sea route to the Spice Island.<br><strong>~ WHAT DID HE DISCOVER</strong><br>Magellan discovered the Strait of Magellan, a passageway through Southern South America and the Pacific Ocean.<br><strong>~ INTERESTING FACTS</strong> <br>1. He gave the Pacific Ocean its name, he originally named it "Mar Pacifico" meaning "Peaceful Sea" in Portuguese. <br>2. The next circumnavigation took place nearly 60 years after the return of Magellan's expedition.<br>3. Although Magellan was known for the first man to travel around the world, it was his personal slave, Enrique, who was the first person to circumnavigate the globe.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Born: 1510 in Salamanca, Spain<br>Died: September 22, 1554 in Mexico<br>Coronado explored the Western coast of Mexico and the Southwestern United States between the years 1540 and 1542. he explored in hopes of finding the rumored seven golden cities of Cibola in the north. Though he did not discover the cities, he did discover the Grand Canyon and the Great Plains of Kansas.<br>Interesting Facts: 1.Francisco was the youngest son of a wealthy aristocrat.</div><div>2. He was forced to return home when he fell off his horse and injured himself.<br>3.  He was injured during a battle with the Zuni people, so he stayed with them while he recovered and sent scouting parties to continue his expedition until he was able to.</div>]]></description>

He went on the voyage at 32.<br>2-Hernando de Soto was named into the Explorer Hall of Fame in Genoa, Italy.<br>3-He was buried in the Mississippi River when he died a year after discovering it.</div>]]></description>

As requested by his emperor, he established Chinese trading relationships with regions of Southeast Asia, India, Arabia and Africa.<br><br><strong>Interesting facts </strong><br>1) he was burned at sea in his seventh voyage.<br><br>2)He also went by the name of San Bao (which means Three Jewels) while serving the prince.<br><br>3)The ships that Zheng He sailed were called "junks".          <description><![CDATA[<div>Born: 1475 in Jerez de los Caballeros, Spain<br>Died: January 12-21 1519 in Acla Panama.<br>He first started exploring in 1500 after being inspired by Christopher Columbus. The purpose was for gold and riches and to bring the royal 1/5 to the king. He was the first European to reach the pacific ocean through the new world by the isthmus of Panama on September 1,1513.<br>1 For a few years he was a pig farmer in hispanola.<br>2 in 1509 he stowed away in a barrel with his dog Leoncico.<br>3 Balboa was sentenced to death by decapitation but it took three tries to do so.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>He was born in 1490, and he died in 1559. He was born in Extremadura, Spain. The country he explored for was Spain. The purpose for his exploration was to sail with Panfilo de Narvaez so Spain could claim territory from Florida to Mexico. <br>He explored from 1527-1536. He discovered parts of Arizona and New Mexico, and parts of the Galveston Island.<br>Interesting Facts:<br>1) After being shipwrecked in Texas, he was captured by Karankawa native Americans, and was held as a slave until he proved himself as a medicine man.<br>2) Before his exploration, he served in the military of Spain.<br>3)  He sought to end the abuse of native Americans, but the colonists he was governing did not agree with that, so they sent him on a ship back to Spain.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>DOB</strong>: c.OCT. 31, 1451 Genoa, Italy<br><strong>DOD</strong>: May 20, 1506 Valladolid, Spain<del><br></del>Columbus began his first voyage in 1476, almost dying to French privateers burning his ship and having to swim to the Coast of Portugal. In 1492, he sailed for the purpose of finding a quicker route to Asia, to no avail. Instead, by landing in different points in the Caribbean, he inadvertently discovered America. He returned from his final voyage in 1504 after tricking Native Americans that he would take away the moon(he said, shortly before a lunar eclipse) if they didn't release their European prisoners. Christopher Columbus died 2 years later, still believing he'd discovered a route to Asia.<br><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Vasco da Gama<br>Born: 1460<br>Died: December 24, 1524<br>Place of Birth: Sines, Portugal<br>Vasco da Gama explored for his birth country of Portugal. His father was also an explorer for Portugal. <br>He began sailing from Libson in 1497 and reached the trading post of Calicut, India in May of 1498. He was sent on a second expedition in 1502; finally returning to India two decades later-where he died. <br>When he began exploring, his purpose was to reach India and open a sea route from Europe to the east. <br>Vasco da Gama found a trade route from Portugal to the east-India. He sailed around the Cape of Good Hope and sailed all the way to India. <br>1) There were a lot of monsoon winds that pushed his ship to India in less than one month.<br>2) On the trip, half of Vasco da Gama's crew died of scurvy- a vitamin C deficiency. <br>3) He had six sons and one daughter. One of his sons became the governor of Portuguese India.<br>  </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Was born in 1475 CE<br>Died in 1541<br>Francisco Pizarro was born in Spain and his nationality is Spanish. Pizarro's objective was to explore and obtain land and wealth for Spain.&nbsp;<br>He became famous and is known for conquering the Inca Empire of Peru. In 1513 he joined Vasco de Balboa in his march to the "South Sea" during which Bolboa discovered the Pacific ocean. In 1532, Pizarro and his brothers conquered Peru.&nbsp; During his quest, Pizarro also killed their emperor, Atahualpa which led Spain to have a firm control over south America.&nbsp;<br> interesting facts about him are&nbsp; when he died, Pizarro was killed by his own people In 1541, Hernando de Soto was part of his group and no one was really sure where he was born.</div>]]></description>
